Description: Robert B. Goldberg, distinguished professor of molecular, cell and developmental biology at UCLA and a member of the National Academy of Sciences, has won numerous awards for his pioneering research, which employs genetic and molecular approaches to study gene expression during plant development and differentiation. In his dynamic lecture on genes, seeds and crops, "What Are the Genes Required to Make a Seed? Importance for Food, Fuel and Engineering New Crops," he addresses what can be done about the 40000 people who die each day of hunger. The lecture is part of the UCLA Science Faculty Research Colloquium Series. Part 2 of this lecture is available at: www.youtube.com
