Description: Europe is drawing consequences from the conflict between Russia and Georgia. The EU now wants closer ties to its eastern neighbors and to gradually bring Ukraine,Belarus,Georgia,Moldova,Azerbaijan,and Armenia into the European Union. EU-accession is still far off,but these countries will receive financial assistance to restructure their societies politically and economically. European Journal is broadcasting portraits of these countries in travelogues: Part Six: Belarus the last dictatorship Relations were long frosty between the EU and the authoritarian President of Belarus,Alexander Lukaschenko. But now things are thawing. Lukaschenko has released some political prisoners and the EU has lifted its economic sanctions. Belarus depends on good relations to the EU,because its economy is doing poorly. Our journey took us from the Lithuanian border to the capital,Minsk.
