Description: About this Event 06 Nov 2009 @ 12:45 EU Energy Security About the Speech: Mr Vinois gave an overview of the main challenges faced by the EU in securing its future energy supply and outlined the Commission's policy response. He charted the development of a more thorough EU energy policy over the last four years; from calls for a more comprehensive policy expressed at the Hampton Court council in 2005 to last November's second strategic review. He noted the increased consensus that has emerged on both the causes of Climate Change and the conclusion that business as usual for a sector responsible for 65% of EU ghg emissions is not sustainable. The issues behind last Januarys gas crisis were covered in some detail and the Commission's response to this dispute with a revision of the gas supply directive was also discussed. Finally Mr Vinois illustrated the provisions of the Lisbon Treaty, on course to be ratified this month, which will help to facilitate a more comprehensive and soldarity-oriented approach to energy issues.
