Description: Clea Fernandez is an assistant professor of psychology and education in the Department of Human Development at Teachers College, Columbia University, where she is also the director of the Lesson Study Research Group. Her research interests include cross-cultural comparisons of mathematics teaching and learning. Most recently her work has focused on teachers' theories of instruction and their experiences as learners-particularly in the context of lesson study, a Japanese form of professional development. Before receiving her Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1993, she worked as a high-school and middle-school mathematics teacher.
