    Missouri State University (MSU or Mo State formerly Southwest Missouri State University or SMSU) is a state university located in Springfield, Missouri. It is the state's second largest university with nearly 21,000 students. The official enrollment figure includes 20,842 students for the Fall 2009 semester. For the seventh consecutive year, MSU has been selected for The Princeton Review’s 2010 list of “Best Colleges: Region by Region.” MSU was granted a statewide mission in Public Affairs in 1995. The name was changed in 2005 to reflect this mission. From 1972 to 2005, Missouri State University was known as Southwest Missouri State University (initialized as SMS). In addition to its main campus, it has a two-year branch campus in West Plains, and various programs in China. The school is classified by the Carnegie foundation as one of six Master's colleges and Universities in Missouri.
