Description: In this University of Washington program, Ravi Ramamoorthi, associate professor of computer science at Columbia University, addresses the many problems in computer graphics that require compact and accurate representations of the appearance of objects, and the mathematical algorithms to manipulate them. Ramamoorthi discusses appropriate mathematical representations for a number of challenging problems in visual appearance. He describes some recent theoretical results in appearance analysis, including image-based rendering from a sparse set of images, analytic methods for rendering scattering effects, and a complete first order analysis of lighting, shading, and shadows.
