Multi-booting and Lightsabers With TechStuff

A long time ago, in a stuffy makeshift studio just down the hall, two brave podcasters recorded episodes of TechStuff. Monday’s episode was all about multi-booting — also known as installing multiple operating systems on a single machine. Wednesday’s show was about an elegant weapon from a more civilized age — the lightsaber.
So what exactly is multi-booting? It’s a process that requires you to divvy up your computer’s storage space to hold different operating systems. Each operating system is walled off from every other OS — if the OS were self-aware it would think it was the only operating system on the computer. When you boot up a computer with multiple operating systems, the computer will prompt you to choose the particular OS you want to use for that session. You can install operating systems in many different configurations but some will work better than others. Some, like the Mac OS, won’t work very well on unauthorized machines and are in violation with an End User License Agreement (EULA).
Wednesday’s show focused on the lightsaber. Chris and I explain how the lightsaber works within the Star Wars mythology. Then we strip away the illusion to tell you how the special effects wizards working for Lucas achieved the lightsaber’s iconic special effects. I also reveal I know way too much about the Star Wars universe. For those who are curious, I do own a lightsaber, which probably doesn’t surprise you. What might surprise you is that it isn’t red.
Stay tuned for more episodes of TechStuff. We’ll be tackling everything from video game testers to the technology of 1510. Remember to write in if you have any suggestions for episode topics!
