Tin Mountain Conservation Center is a 501(c)(3) non-profit providing environmental programming for school children, adults, and families that fosters greater awareness and understanding of the natural environment. Founded by Barbara Rockwell Henry and David Henry in 1980, the Center offers hands-on programs in the schools, at summer camps, and within communities throughout northern New Hampshire and western Maine. The Teacher/Naturalist must be committed to environmental stewardship, environmental education for all ages, conscientious about his/her work, and enthusiastic about all programs presented to children and adults. The desire to pitch in where needed, accept challenges, and anticipate new opportunities are essential. Staff cooperation, innovation, and self motivation are critical to the position.
Qualifications:
A strong background in environmental education and natural history is required for this position; however, the most important attributes are enthusiasm, genuine excitement for the work, and a ‘can-do' attitude. Good communication skills are vital since the Teacher/Naturalist represents Tin Mountain in a variety of functions and programs throughout the year. The position requires excellent writing and platform skills since the Teacher/Naturalist will contribute articles to seasonal newsletters, write curriculum publications, correspond with a variety of individuals and organizations, and represent Tin Mountain to the public. The Teacher/Naturalist should have backpacking and canoeing skills, wilderness first aid, and water safety certification (or the ability to acquire these certifications). Masters degree preferred.
Duties:
- Plan and present environmental programs for students grades K-8
- Develop and conduct curriculum/lesson plans for a variety of school and after school programs
- Work closely with teachers to integrate programs with school curricula and state standards
- Lead field trips for school groups, home schools, and other outreach groups
- Work with teaching staff to identify new program opportunities
- Develop, market, and conduct teacher workshops, field trips, and other teaching opportunities
- Assist with organization of summer/winter camps
- Direct assigned sessions of summer nature day/explorer camps
- Participate actively in ongoing projects that support the organization's mission
- Maintain flexible work schedule that matches the extended hours of the center and its programs
- Communicate program and organizational goals to the public
- Evaluate success of programs presented
- Develop and conduct programs for adult and family nature program series and adult classes
- Contribute to the wide variety of tasks that typically arise in the existence of a small non-profit
- Participate in special fund raising events
