Researchers find that one type of stem cell creates a niche for another type in bone marrow

Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory researchers and members of a multi-institutional team have discovered the precise source of hematopoietic stem cell maintenance and regulation within the bone marrow. In a study that appears in Nature on Aug. 12, the collaborators report that the HSCs retain their unique features of multipotency and self-renewal in response to signals from another stem cell population, the mesenchymal stem cells, which create a supportive niche for the HSCs.
