A recent study published in the journal Science, shows a possible new use for the toucan’s bill. The researchers studied 6 toucans while changing the air temperature and using infrared thermal imaging to read the surface temperature of their bills. The findings show the toucan’s bill can radiate body heat and adjust to the changes in the temperature. However there are still some unanswered questions. SFI External Professor and evolutionary biologist John Pepper states, “We can see heat radiated by the bill but that doesn’t prove what the purpose of the bill is.” More research needs to be conducted in order to prove this theory.
