Job Description: Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: working with students in their classroom to design a marine research project, and a communication piece in the form of a power point. Aboard the sailing vessel, the Program Coordinator is directly responsible for overseeing onboard program operations. The Program Coordinator also works with another Marine Scientist aboard to supervise students who are creating a sampling plan and itinerary, deploying science equipment, collecting and analyzing data. In the evenings, the Program Coordinator is on shore assisting in setting up tents, cooking and organizing free time activities for student participants. The Program Coordinator works with one other Scientist and 4-5 other staff aboard, and independently. Trips range from 3 to 5 day expeditions with students where each night the vessel is either docked or anchored, and short 2-4 hour promotional sails throughout the season. Office time will be necessary to prepare for the trips. Other duties may include program development, assisting in food and supply packing, office and logistical projects and general maintenance of vessel.

Direct onboard program operations for majority of Salish Sea Expeditions programs (55%)
• Oversee daily program details; Program Coordinators duties include, but are not limited
• Participate in educational role onboard during programs;
• Supervise staff, volunteers and interns during programs;
• Report daily to Education Director during programs;
• Collaborate with Program Director to support risk management and ensure adherence to all
policies;
• Ensure safety of all program operations and all equipment;
• Ensure Inventory/Maintenance of camping, boat, and science equipment is updated and complete;
• Prior to programs, communicate with upcoming teachers or groups and parents as needed.

Qualifications:
• Bachelor's Degree in science, education, marine science, or related field, or 3+ years relevant experience;
• Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail and effective communication skills;
• Ability to carry out crisis management policies;
• Ability to effectively multi-task;
• Significant experience working with 10-16 year olds;
• Ability to carry out and explain the scientific process;
• Demonstrated Inquiry Based teaching ability;
• Current first aid/CPR;
• Enthusiasm for working outdoors in all types of weather;
• Ability to work well both individually and as a team member.

Teaching certification, outdoor education experience, advanced first aid, and boating skills desirable. Knowledge of the physical and biological processes of the Puget Sound. Sufficient physical strength and agility to carry out the essential duties of the position, including participating in boat based activities, lifting and carrying gear up to 50 pounds, as well as an ability to be an effective team member in the risk management strategies and mission of the organization.

Contract dates: FALL SEASON, September 5, 2011 –October 29, 2011- full time

Compensation: $1400-$1600/mo. depending on experience, plus shared room & partial board

Salish Sea Expeditions was founded in 1994 and is a marine science educational organization that introduces 5th-12th grade students to Puget Sound and marine science through a 3-5 day research project, which is conducted from the decks of a sailboat. Students are the key decision makers in every aspect of the program, from choosing a study project to developing a hypothesis, determining a sampling plan, and operating the boat.
