Major Duties
Under the general direction of the Senior Director and Executive Editor, the Communications Specialist joins a team responsible for promoting the mission, vision, reputation and brand of the university through media, publications and web/electronic communications, working closely with advancement colleagues in Alumni Relations, Development, and Government Relations, and other campus communicators. S/he writes and edits a range of content for the university website and for electronic distribution via email to various constituents, edits HTML to make changes in web page templates and HTML email newsletters to accommodate content, and helps coordinate the social media functions and needs of University Advancement, in collaboration with many campus partners.
The incumbent will focus on three key communications areas: web, electronic and social media.
Web/Electronic: Writes and edits mission-aligned web news and features about the university, including stories about students, faculty, programs and achievements, collaborating with Marketing and Communications staff, to ensure continuous dynamic content on the university homepage and other web pages; serves as the online editor the bi-annual publication, Northridge magazine, converting content from print to online format; edits electronic communications for style and consistency for target audiences, including alumni, donors, civic officials, neighbors and friends of the university. Edits HTML to make changes in web page templates and HTML email newsletters to accommodate content; writes messages for university electronic signboard, sets schedules for messages, creates graphics for signboard, uploads messages and graphics to signboard; works across the division to present engaging, dynamic and up-to-date content on the University Advancement website; collaborates with department writer/editors, photographer and videographer.
Social Media: Implements and leverages social media outreach strategies for Facebook (44,000+ fans), Twitter (4,000 followers) and other social media channels to enhance Cal State Northridge¿s image and reputation; measures and reports on the impact of social media on the University's overall strategic communications efforts; serves as a first responder in emergency communications, helping facilitate social media messaging; monitors relevant news, conversations and trends in social media sites, tools and applications; works collaboratively with other departments and divisions on incorporating relevant social media techniques into communications.
