Both the men and women's cross country teams finished third in a pack of five at the annual Ric Sayre Invitational. The men finished with a total of 83 points. John Carroll won the event with 20 points. Mt. Union finished second with 36. Finishing behind the Cavs were Hiram and Lake Erie with 116 and 132 points, respectively.
Justin Groubert (Fr., Hartville, OH/Lake) was the first runner for Walsh and 12th out of 68 overall in the 8K/5 mile with a time of 27:21. Jordan Groubert (Jr., Hartville, OH/Lake) was the second runner for the Cavaliers and 15th overall with a time of 27:33. The third runner for Walsh was Jackson Zaremba (Fr., Canton, OH/GlenOak) with a time of 28:25. Adam Stilgenbauer (Jr., New Philadelphia, OH/Tuskey Catholic) was fourth for Walsh with a time of 28:39. Dan Opeka (Sr., Louisville, OH/St. Thomas Aquinas) finished right behind him and closed out the scoring for the Cavs with a time of 28:42. Rounding out the top seven for Walsh were Nick Isla (So., Canton, OH/McKinley) with a time of 28:50, and Ryan Garrott (Sr., Georgetown, TX/HS). The team finished with a time spread of 1:21 (27:21-28:42).
"We had a good opening meet by hosting the Ric Sayre Invitational last weekend," said Coach Christopher Straub following his coaching debut at Walsh.
