The first season of a show is a vital thing, it needs to not only hook the audience into wanting more but it also needs to have a very particular type of ending. Conversely there's a real balancing act to not dedicating too much time to side-stories and irrelevant plot pieces. So many shows have trouble with this and end up giving tertiary characters far too much levity. We need to know the support cast but they don't need to be a main focus of the show.The real thing that 'Scandal' needs to establish in this premier season is it's background plot. With every episode being somewhat stand-alone their needs to be a real underlying depth to tie everything together. The synopsis for 'Scandal' outlines the way in which the team struggles to keep professional and private lives separate so that'll probably be main theme for the series. We'll likely see some major conflict between the supporting characters and Olivia over her "Always trust your gut" policy. How many times can she be right? What if she gets it wrong? These are questions that will probably get answered toward the end of the series, likely around episode 5. The final set of episodes will probably see everything go wrong, leaving Olivia and the team to do a major clean up of both their own lives and the lives of their clients. This sense of loss and redemption is a staple of first season plot lines and 'Scandal' will likely follow suite.Finally we come to the cast, 'Scandal' is starting with a fairly bulky cast boasting around 10 main characters. This is decadent even for this type of show, this means that we're incredibly likely to see some characters either dropped or written naturally out of the show towards the end. The finale could be a real culling for spares in the same way that mid-season one of The Walking Dead did. Someone's chickens will ALWAYS come home to roost, this is truly the case in the One Tree Hill TV series.
