  • Survivable and Disruption Tolerant Networking Issues Challenges and Re...

  • Abstract: This presentation surveys the issues and challenges in enhancing network survivability and providing application-toapplication disruption tolerance, with emphasis on mobile wireless and long-delay communication. Conventional fault tolerance methods are necessary but not sufficient for survivability, since failures due to a coordinated attack are not random. Interlayer awareness (knobs and dials) is required for lower layers to convey their state upward, and for users and upper layers to exert influence downward. A systematic approach is required on three levels: 1. Survivable network architect...

  • Early-Stage Design and Prototyping of Cross-Device User Interfaces by ...

  • Abstract: People often use a variety of computing devices, such as pcs, pdas, and cell phones, to access the same information. The user interface to this information needs to be different for each device, due to the different input and output constraints of each device. Currently designers designing such cross-device user interfaces either have to design a ui separately for each device, which is time consuming, or use a program to automatically generate interfaces, which often result in interfaces that are awkward. Each method also discourages iterative design, considered critical for creating good user...

  • PERFORMANCE MEASURES OF A ROBOTIC MICROPOSrrIONER

  • Abstract: This work describes a computer simulation of the dynamics and control of a robotic micropositioner. The robotic micropositioner is a parallel link manipulator which has six actuators, each controlled independently by a hydraulic system. The dynamic equations of the micropositioner are derived. The control algorithm for path tracing is formulated and tested. In this work the performance of the micropositioner is investigated as function of damping, speed, payload, and location of target.

  • Providing VCR Capabilities in Large-Scale Video Servers 1994

  • Abstract: Providing smooth playback capabilities for video servers, which must support potentially thousands of on-demand users, has been an area of active research. From a user's perspective, VCR functions of fast-forward and rewind (FF/Rew), are desirable features in video-on-demand. But FF/Rew at n times the regular playback rate requires n times the regular playback bandwidth from architectural components of the video server. Thus, guaranteeing sufficient bandwidth to enable users to perform FF/Rew reduces the number of supportable users by a factor of n. In this paper we propose an alternative, eff...

  • Smoothing Statistical Multiplexing and Call Admission Control for Stor...

  • Abstract: VBR compressed video is known to exhibit significant, multiple-time-scale rate variability. A number of researchers have considered transmitting stored video from a server to a client using smoothing algorithms to reduce this rate variability. These algorithms exploit client buffering capabilities and determine a "smooth" rate transmission schedule, while ensuring that a client buffer neither overflows nor underflows. In this paper, we investigate how video smoothing impacts the statistical multiplexing gains available with such traffic and show that a significant amount of statistical multipl...

  • Abstract: JEL No. F1 The core subjects of trade theory are the pattern and volume of trade: which goods are traded by which countries, and how much of those goods are traded. The first part of the paper discusses evidence on comparative advantage, with an emphasis on carefully connecting theory models to data analyses. The second part of the chapter first considers the theoretical foundations of the gravity model, and then reviews the small number of papers that have tried to test, rather than simply use, the implications of gravity. Both parts of the paper yield the same conclusion: we are still in the...

  • DENIM An Informal Tool for Early Stage Web Site Design 2001 6 citation...

  • Abstract: DENIM is a system that helps web site designers in the early stages of design. DENIM supports sketching input; allows design at different refinement levels--site map, storyboard, and individual page; and unifies the levels through zooming. The design of DENIM was informed by a study of web site design practice, in which we observed that web site designers design sites at the levels of refinement mentioned above and that designers sketch at all levels during the early stages of design.
