The Patient: Patient-Centered Outcomes Research is an international quarterly medical journal dedicated to presenting solely the patient's perspective. The quarterly journal is a joint venture between Wolters Kluwer Health | Adis and the Department of Health Policy and Management at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (JHSPH).
A patient is any person who receives medical attention, care, or treatment. The person is most often ill or injured and in need of treatment by a physician or other health care professional, although one who is visiting a physician for a routine check-up may also be viewed as a patient. The word patient originally meant 'one who suffers'. This English noun comes from the Latin word patiens, the present participle of the deponent verb, patior, meaning 'I am suffering,' and akin to the Greek verb p s e (= paskhein, to suffer) and its cognate noun p (= pathos).

e-Patients (also known as Internet Patient, or Internet-savvy Patient) are health consumers who use the Internet to gather information about a medical condition of particular interest to them. The term encompasses both those who seek online guidance for their own ailments and the friends and family members (e-Caregivers) who go online on their behalf.
Abstract: Intra-operative patient controlled sedation with propofol (bolus dose 18 mg over 5.4 s; lockout period 1 min) has been compared to continuous propofol infusion (3.6 mg.kg-1.h-1) in a randomised crossover study of 38 ASA 1 or 2 day surgery patients undergoing two-stage bilateral extraction of third molar teeth under local anaesthesia (76 procedures). Mean (SD) propofol used (mg.kg-1) was less with patient-controlled sedation (2.39 (1.28) than with the infusion (2.58 (0.84)) but the difference was not statistically significant. There were only minor differences between the methods in postoperati...
Abstract: PURPOSE: To test the feasibility of using patient acuity indicators as proxy measures for the AACN Synergy Model for Patient Care patient characteristics. DESIGN AND METHODS: Secondary data analysis of a convenience sample of 481 patient ratings from adult and pediatric critical and noncritical medical surgical patients. FINDINGS: Combining dichotomous patient acuity indicators into multilevel categorical variables allowed evaluation of linear relationships between acuity and patient characteristics indicators. Of the 8 patient characteristics, only participation in care exhibited meaningful c...
Abstract: Although the quantity and, in many cases, the quality of research on the practitioner-patient interaction has improved over the last 10-15 years, many related topics remain largely unexplored. The relationship of the similarity of practitioner and patient preferences to treatment adherence has not been carefully investigated, either in a medical or dental setting. This paper presents a study of patient and practitioner preferences for a dental appointment, and assesses the impact of their similarity on patient satisfaction with the appointment and adherence to the recommended treatment regimen...
Abstract: BACKGROUND: Patients can play an important role in improving patient safety by becoming actively involved in their health care. However, there is a paucity of empirical data on the extent to which patients take on such a role. In order to encourage patient participation in patient safety we first need to assess the full range of factors that may be implicated in such involvement. OBJECTIVE: To delineate factors that could affect the participation of the patient in quality and safety issues in their health care. METHOD: Literature review of patient involvement in health care, drawing from direc...
Abstract: The development of good-quality patient information is a major challenge to improve quality of cancer care. The SOR SAVOIR PATIENT program aims to improve patients' understanding of cancer treatment and to facilitate their participation in clinical decisions. This programme develops evidence-based information for cancer patients based on clinical practice guidelines in oncology, the "Standards, Options and Recommendations" (SOR) which are used as primary information sources. "Translation" of SOR guidelines to laymen uses a multidisciplinary approach involving specialists in cancer care, psycho...
Abstract: 96 randomised outpatients of the Medical University Policlinic at Basle were interviewed at their first medical examination: 88 patients were told their diagnosis. Afterwards 76 were able to name the diagnosis correctly, with 55% showing good, 26% mediocre and 19% insufficient understanding of their illness. This understanding was influenced by profession, age and sex. With the aid of 25 medical terms familiar to a layman, basic medical knowledge of the patient was tested. Half of the questions were answered correctly, with a good correlation between understanding of the disease and basic medi...
Abstract: In this case, the medical team learned about the Hmong cultural beliefs and collaborated with the family to design a plan of care that included their nonwestern medical practices. Improved health care for the child resulted from a partnership between the Hmong community, extended family members, cross-cultural nursing staff, and the nephrology team. This experience amended existing protocols for managing diverse populations and because of its success, the pediatric nephrology team was awarded the UCSD Healthcare Diversity Award in 1998.
Abstract: We describe the Virtual Standardized Patient (VSP) application, having a computerized virtual person who interacts with medical practitioners in much the same way as actors hired to teach and evaluate patient assessment, diagnosis, and interviewing skills. The VSP integrates technologies from two successful research projects conducted at Research Triangle Institute. AVATALK provides natural language processing, emotion and behavior modeling, and composite facial expression and lip-shape modeling for a natural patient-practitioner dialog. Trauma Patient Simulator provides case-based patient his...
Abstract: Much emphasis is placed on reducing waiting times to improve the quality of patient visits; however, it has been pointed out that improving the quantity of patients seen does not necessarily equate with quality (Hart 1996). This paper describes the design, implementation and evaluation of a pilot feasibility project and audit to improve the quality of patient's follow-up visits to the oncology out-patient department through the use of a 'concerns checklist'. Questionnaires administered to patients and health-care professionals involved in the project were audited. The results indicated that pa...
