An organ is an essential component of a machine. The term is applied metaphorically to various "systems", including the components of an organism or a government.
An intromittent organ is a general term for an external organ of a male organism that is specialized to deliver sperm during copulation. Intromittent organs are found most often in terrestrial species, as most aquatic species fertilize their eggs externally, although there are exceptions.
In 1852 Jacob Estey bought out a Brattleboro, Vermont manufacturing business and founded the Estey Organ Company, which became the largest manufacturer of American organs. The original company had been founded in 1846.
Registration is the technique of choosing and combining the stops of a pipe organ in order to produce a particular sound. Registration can also refer to a particular combination of stops.
Organ trade is the trade involving human organs for transplantation. There is a worldwide shortage of organs available for transplantion, possibly a result of regulations forbidding their trafficking.
Abstract: Samples of a juxtaoral organ were examined immunohistochemically with antibodies against light-chain cytokeratin (KL-1), cytokeratin 19, desmin, chromogranin, neuron-specific enolase, and S-100 protein. The epithelial cells were found to be immunoreactive only with the two cytokeratin antibodies. Transmission electron microscopy was also performed. The results are best compatible with a mechanoreceptor function of the organ.
Abstract: The terms extended donor or expanded donor mean changes in donor acceptability criteria. In almost all cases, the negative connotations of these terms cannot be justified. Factors considered to affect donor or organ acceptability have changed with time, after showing that they did not negatively affect graft or patient survival per se or when the adequate measures had been adopted. There is no age limit to be an organ donor. Kidney and liver transplantation from donors older than 65 years can have excellent graft and patient actuarial survival and graft function. Using these donors can be from...
Abstract: With the increasing success of organ transplantation in this country, there are increasing numbers of patients who are awaiting a transplantable organ. Congress has established a national Organ Procurement and Transplant Network, which is administered by the United Network for Organ Sharing. Organ retrieval is performed by 70 organ procurement organizations, each having a designated service area. The need for transplantable organs falls further and further behind the increasing demand.
Abstract: One of the goals of the Organ Center of the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network/United Network for Organ Sharing is to increase the efficiency of equitable organ allocation in the United States. Recognizing the ever-growing need for organ donors and transplants, leaders at the Organ Center increased its commitment to quality improvement initiatives through the development of a quality management team in 2001. The Organ Center began to focus on ways to capture data on processes and pinpoint areas for improvement. As the collection and analysis of data evolved, the Organ Center embrace...
Abstract: Thirty-five heart and kidney transplant patients were interviewed on five separate occasions during the first 2 yr after transplantation. The aim was to explore their experiences of phenomena that distinguish the transplantation from other kinds of medical treatment. The selection of informants was designed to permit comparisons between recipients with heart and kidney transplants and with living and necro-transplants. The qualitative analysis of the informants' reactions was focused on three themes; nine categories emerged. The first theme concerned general aspects of the donation and the don...
Abstract: Plant organs are generated from meristems throughout development. Patterning and elaboration of organ primordia occur as a result of organized cell division and expansion, processes that are likely to be controlled, in part, by meristem-derived signals. Communication between the meristem and lateral organs is crucial for meristem maintenance and organ patterning, and organ boundaries are thought to be important for mediating this communication. Arabidopsis thaliana LATERAL ORGAN FUSION1 (LOF1) encodes a MYB-domain transcription factor that is expressed in organ boundaries. lof1 mutants display...
Abstract: 1. The frequency of heart and lung transplantation has increased dramatically over time. The number of heart transplants increased 170% between 1968 and 1981. Exponential increases began in 1982 and increased through 1990, as evidenced by a 1,835% growth in the number of procedures performed during those years. In more recent years, heart transplant numbers have leveled off, with only an 8% increase in the last 3 years. Lung transplant procedures have grown significantly in the short period of time between 1987 (n = 18) and 1993 (n = 669). 2. Since the beginning of the ISHLT Registry in 1968 t...
Abstract: The increasing size of the transplant waiting list and the increasing use of expanded criteria donors places a premium on efficient use of recovered organs. Maximal organ utilization often necessitates organ sharing between transplant organizations. Optimal organ sharing requires rapid, integrated communication of donor information combined with expedited organ transportation. For more than 20 years, the United Network for Organ Sharing's Organ Center has fulfilled this task for the United States transplant community. This overview details a brief history of United States organ sharing and the...
