     Group description

The Vale of Tempe (modern Greek: Témpi), celebrated by Greek poets as a favorite haunt of Apollo and the Muses, is the ancient name of a gorge in northern Thessaly, Greece, located between Olympus to the north and Ossa to the south. The valley is 10 kilometers long and as narrow as 25 meters in places, with cliffs nearly 500 meters high, and through it flows the Pineios River on its way to the Aegean Sea.

  • Virtualization of Local Computer Bus Architectures Over the Internet

  • Abstract: Abstract We propose a companion solution to iSCSI that is more suited for virtualization of local computer bus architectures, such as PCI/PCI-X and PCI Express. We explore the architecture of a possible virtualization protocol. The solution would allow extension of the host computer bus via an IP network based on 10Gbps Ethernet. This solution would allow adapter cards to be located remote from host systems via the Internet, yet appear as a local bus resource. We present Quality of Service (QOS) goals for PCI Express virtualization and expansion via IP. Critical QOS characteristics such as da...

  • Abstract: The formation of water soluble vitamins (vitamin B12, vitamin B6, riboflavin, thiamine, nicotinic acid and nicotinamide) during the tempe solid substrate fermentation was investigated. The role of several strains of Rhizopus oligosporus, R. arrhizus, and R. stolonifer and the role of several bacteria in the vitamin formation process were checked. All fungal and bacterial strains were isolated from Indonesian tempe and soaking water samples. The Rhizopus strains formed riboflavin, nicotinic acid, nicotinamide and vitamin B6. The final concentrations of these substances depended on the different...

  • Using quantiles in ranking and selection procedures

  • Abstract: Abstract A useful performance measure on which to compare manufacturing systems is a quantile of the cycle time distribution. Unfortunately, aside from order statistic estimates, which can require significant data storage, the distribution of quantile estimates has not been shown to be normally distributed, violating a common assumption amongst ranking-and-selection (R&S) procedures. To address this, we provide empirical evidence supporting an approach using the mean of a group of quantile estimates as the comparison measure. The approach is detailed and illustrated through experimentation on...

  • Topology Design of Service Overlay Network with a Generalized Cost Mod...

  • Abstract: Abstract Service Overlay Network (SON) was proposed to alleviate the difficulties encountered in providing end-to-end Quality of Service (QoS) guarantees. SON is able to provide QoS guarantees by purchasing bandwidth from individual network domains and building a logical end-to-end data delivery infrastructure on top of the existing Internet. We focus on SON topology design problems under a generalized cost model. Earlier research in this topic considered two distinct cost models - fixed (leased) cost model and variable (usage-based) cost model. However in most applications, the costs of both...

  • P6H-9 Discerning the Quality of ZnO Films from Their Etch Properties

  • Abstract: Abstract Several tests have been used over the years to determine the quality of thin film zinc oxide. These tests have included coupling factor measurement, acoustic and optical loss, surface roughness, and grain size. One such test, which is especially useful when establishing the best ZnO deposition condition, is chemical etching. Chemical etching reveals considerable information about the density of the fiber grain structure, the film orientation, film strain, and can be related to coupling factor. Etching ZnO films or crystals is highly anisotropic depending upon whether the acid attacks...

  • Abstract: Abstract Preserving a person's privacy in an efficient manner is very important for critical, life-saving infrastructures like body sensor networks (BSN). This paper presents a novel key agreement scheme which allows two sensors in a BSN to agree to a common key generated using electrocardiogram (EKG) signals. This EKG-based key agreement (EKA) scheme aims to bring the "plug-n-play" paradigm to BSN security whereby simply deploying sensors on the subject can enable secure communication, without requiring any form of initialization such as pre-deployment. Analysis of the scheme based on real E...
