     Group description

Landscape architecture is a the design of outdoor and public spaces to achieve socio-behavioural, environmental, and/or aesthetic outcomes. It involves the systematic investigation of existing social, ecological, and geological conditions and processes in the landscape, and the careful design of interventions that will interact with these conditions and processes to produce the desired outcome. The scope of the profession includes urban design, site planning, town or urban planning, environmental restoration, parks and recreation planning; green infrastructure planning and provision, all at varying scales of design, planning and management. In North America and Europe, landscape architecture is a regulated profession. , A practitioner in the profession of landscape architecture is called a landscape architect. Through the 19th century, urban planning became more important, and it was the combination of modern planning with the tradition of landscape gardening that gave Landscape Architecture its unique focus. In the second half of the century, Frederick Law Olmsted completed a series of parks which continue to have a huge influence on the practices of Landscape Architecture today. Among these were Central Park in New York, Prospect Park in Brooklyn, and Boston's so called Emerald Necklace park system. Landscape architecture continues to develop as a design discipline, and has responded to many of the movements of design and architecture through the 20th century. Today, a healthy level of innovation continues to provide challenging design solutions for streetscapes, parks and gardens. The work of Martha Schwartz in the US,and in Europe designs such as Schouwburgplein in Rotterdam by the Dutch design group (West 8) are just two examples.

  • Abstract: Assigning the values of a certain physicochemical property for individual amino acids to the corresponding codons, we can make an amino acid property "landscape" on a four valued three dimensional sequence space from a genetic code table. Eleven property landscapes made from the standard genetic code (SGC) were analyzed. The evaluation of correlation for each landscape is done by theta value, which represents the ratio of the mean slope (as an additive term) to the degree of roughness (as a nonadditive term). The theta-values for hydropathy indices, polarity, specific heat, and beta-sheet prop...

  • Abstract: Forest pathology inherently involves a landscape perspective, because tree pathogens propagate according to heterogeneous spatial patterns of flow and isolation. Landscape pathology is a field that is now emerging from the transdisciplinary cooperation of forest pathologists with landscape ecologists. Here, we review recent broad-scale assessments of tree disease risk, investigations of site and host preferences for several root rot pathogens, and regional historical analyses of pathogen outbreak in plantations. Crucial topics include fragmentation effects on pathogen spread and geophysical fe...

  • Abstract: This study developed a comprehensive framework to incorporate landscape ecological principles into the landscape planning and design process, with a focus on the design of new patches in the rural landscape. The framework includes two interrelated phases: patch analyst (PA) and patch designer (PD). The patch analyst augments the process of landscape inventory and analysis. It distinguishes nodes (associated with potential habitat patches) from links (associated with corridors and stepping stones between habitats). For natural vegetation patches, characteristics such as size, shape, and spatial...

  • Abstract: The NK fitness landscape is a mathematical landscape model with a parameter k that governs the degree of ruggedness of the landscape. We presented a procedure to fit a given landscape to the NK fitness landscape by introducing the "apparent k-value"k(app). In this paper, we defined the protein free energy (DeltaG) landscape in amino acid sequence space, where DeltaG is the folding free energy from a random coil to a "certain conformation". Applying this landscape to our fitting procedure, we examined the statistical properties of the landscape. For calculation of a conformation energy, amino a...

  • Abstract: Habitat fragmentation is the focus of much conservation concern and associated research. In some countries, such as Britain, the main phase of fragmentation occurred centuries ago and the focus of conservation management is now on restoration and recovery. Scenario studies have suggested that spatial targeting is preferable if landscape scale restoration is to be achieved, and that this should bring greater benefits than site-focussed activities but this has rarely been tested in practice. In Britain, woodland expansion has been encouraged through a number of financial incentives, which have e...

  • Abstract: This investigation tested the usefulness of geometry-based landscape metrics for monitoring landscapes in a heavily disturbed environment. Research was carried out in a 75 sq km study area in Saxony, eastern Germany, where the landscape has been affected by surface mining and agricultural intensification. Landscape metrics were calculated from digital maps (1912, 1944, 1973, 1989) for the entire study area and for subregions (river valleys, plains), which were defined using the original geology and topography of the region. Correlation and factor analyses were used to select a set of landscape...

  • [Consistency between neutral landscape models and real landscape]

  • Abstract: Neutral landscape models (NLM) can provide standards against real landscapes, and are used to describe landscape pattern and process in the past few decades. In this paper, the neutral landscape models RULE and SimMap were tested against a real landscape, and a set of landscape metrics were used to quantify the spatial characteristics of real and simulated patterns. Measurements of some metrics (total number of patches, total perimeter, average patch area, aggregation index, contagion and lacunarity) suggested that definite level of consistency between NLM-generated maps and real landscape did...

  • Abstract: Oasis landscape ecosystem is composed of 10 landscape elements, i.e., residence land, cultivated land, grassland, forestland, water area, water system, road, rocky desert, sandy desert, and gravel desert. Among the elements, cultivated land formed by human being production covers the most of the area, is most connected, and hence, is the matrix of the oasis landscape ecosystem. Residence land, grassland, forestland, water area, rocky desert, sandy desert, and gravel desert are patches. Residence land and forestland generate from human being production, while rocky desert, gravel desert and san...

  • Abstract: This paper develops and applies two concepts which are fundamental to landscape ecology. These concepts concern biocybernetics, which is the theory of regulation of biological and ecological systems, and ther- modynamics, especially the flux of energy and the production of entropy. The landscape state factors, in- cluding site conditions and fluxes of energy, materials, and organisms, are shaped by the biocybernetic and thermodynamic processes. This theory provides us a way of understanding and discussing complex human interactions with landscape systems, expressing our concept of the whole la...

  • Abstract: Landscape structural characteristics, such as patch size, edge length, and configuration, are altered markedly when management regimes are imposed on primeval landscapes. The ecological consequences of clearcutting patterns were explored by using a model of the dispersed patch or checkerboard system currently practiced on federal forest lands in the western United States. Thresholds in landscape structure were observed on a gradient of percentages of landscape cutover. Probability of disturbance, e.g., wildfire and windthrow, and biotic components, e.g., species diversity and game populations,...

This study aimed at analyzing spatial change in the park environment by using object-based classification technique and landscape structure metrics. SPOT 2X (1994) and ASTER (2005) images are the primary research materials. Results show that artificial surfaces, low maqui, garrigue, and moderately high maqui covers have increased and coniferous forests, arable lands, permanent crop, and high maqui covers have decreased; coniferous forest, high maqui, grassland, and saline areas are in a disappearance stage of the ...

  • Abstract: Recent landscape changes in a farmed landscape are analysed and related to farm and farmer characteristics. It is assumed that farm and farmer characteristics serve as mediators of large scale or macro driving forces of change-in the present case, a changing farming context including demands for a more environmentally friendly farming practise and a reduced output. The results are based on multivariate analyses of data collected from structured interviews of 160 farmers in a case study area, in central Jutland, measuring 5000 ha. The analysis shows that farmers are highly involved in landscape...
