The recent discovery of a phenomenon of craniofacial growth, called craniofacial contraction, throws a new light on the process of hominization. The main interest of this discovery lies in a growth principle combining the different craniofacial units, that is to say, the neurocranium (neural skull), the chondrocranium (basal skull) and the splanchnocranium (visceral archs including the mandible). Until recent years, these different parts were considered as neighbouring element without any morphogenic or morphodynamic connection. But now, we kno...
AIM OF THE STUDY: The surgeon must inform his patient about eventual risks before any investigation with diagnosis purpose and before any therapeutic intervention. According to the decree of the first Civil chamber of the "Court of Cassation", the surgeon must be able to prove that this information has been given as required by the article 1315 of the civil code. This decree has created in France an important change in the relationship between surgeon and patient. The French Academy of Surgery has organized a special session to study this probl...
L-arginine is the physiological precursor of nitric oxide (NO) which is formed in endothelial cells by the activity of the constitutive NO synthase isoenzyme. NO is tonically released from the endothelium, thus maintaining an active vasodilator tone and inhibiting platelet aggregation, leukocyte adhesion, and vascular smooth muscle cell proliferation. In experimental hypercholesterolemia and atherosclerosis as well as in hypercholesterolemic patients, NO-mediated responses have been shown to be impaired. Whether decreased formation and/or enhan...
Vocational and economic aspects of social functioning were evaluated for 196 adult cleft subjects, their 190 siblings and 209 random controls. Results indicated that cleft adults functioned within normal limits with regard to employment. However, levels of income were substantively lower than control groups. Cleft subjects compare favorably with their siblings and random controls in occupational mobility over the levels attained by their fathers. It would appear that cleft subjects experience some limitation in their ability to secure vocationa...
The eye, due to its rich vascularity, is frequently involved, directly or not, in the systemic immune vascular pathology. For a better understanding of the ocular clinical syndrome, the paper discusses the etiologic and pathogenic factors, and their influence on the characteristics of chorioretinal changes. The etiologic factors are classified according to the predominance of the lesions of the choroidal or retinal vessels. The pathogeny of the chorioretinal changes is correlated with the histopathologic lesion (fibrinoid necrosis) and its invo...
The concept of body image in psychiatric usage, although vague as a concept, is nonetheless valuable in understanding the effects on development of a child's physical defect or physical illness, or of illness in the mother. The concepts of mirroring and the development of a true self have been considered as they relate to the body. Finally, a case of anorexia nervosa in a young adolescent, wherein mirroring of the physical self by the mother was aberrant in part because of an illness in infancy, has been presented. The development of a cohesive...
