this paper, we outline a theory of linguistic structure which talks about talking about trees; we call this theory Description theory (D-theory). While important issues must be resolved before a complete picture of D-theory emerges (and also before we can build programs which utilize it), we believe that this theory will ultimately provide a framework for explaining the syntax and semantics of natural language in a manner which is intrinsically computational. This paper will focus primarily on one set of motivations for this theory, those engen...

the data, and to our anonymous reviewers for their insightful comments. Talking About Trauma 2 Research on talking about trauma as a means of coping typically relies on retrospective self reports. The present study analyzed Internet chat room conversations about the death of Princess Diana for four weeks after her death to begin to map the ways people naturally talk about shared disasters and to seek evidence of social stages of coping. In the first hours and days, people exhibited high levels of personal and emotional responses to the loss of ...

Abstract We present a method to generate mouth animations coupled with moderate movements of the head. Our method uses a coarse 2D textured mesh representation of images. With hardware texture mapping, we obtain 30 frames/sec animations on modest PC platforms. The synthesized animation sequence is realistic and lively. Radial basis functions are used in the underlying animation engine. At each phoneme transition, the positions of the mesh nodes are determined by RBF coefficients associated with a set of sparse feature points. Blending textures...

Abstract Research has been in progress now for over 40 years to develop machines that will recognise natural speech. The author discusses the problems of speech coding, recognition and synthesis. Research aimed at improving the analysis of the original speech and subsequent synthesis, and progress to date are discussed. The use of intelligent conversational dialogue and future developments are also discussed
