Factors influencing threshold and choice of treatment for hypertension in NIDDM. Cardiovascular factors. Yudkin JS. Academic Unit of Diabetes and Endocrinology, Whittington Hospital, London, United Kingdom. In nondiabetic populations, there is an approximately 40% increase in stroke risk and a 25% increase in coronary heart disease (CHD) risk with every 6-mmHg increase above 75 mmHg in usual diastolic blood pressure. Diabetes increases the risk of both conditions by two- to threefold, and in diabetic patients, hypertension further increases ...

Abstract We present detailed calculations of the mode structure of distributed-Bragg-reflector micropost microcavities. Two methods are used: a first-principles, finite-difference time-domain model, and an approximate, heuristic model based on the separation of variables. We calculate modal quality factors, as well as enhancement of spontaneous emission rates, from single quantum dots in the microcavities. Both ideal and realistic post shapes are considered. The two methods give similar results, and are capable of accurately predicting experim...

[Osteoporotic fractures of the spine in elderly women. Risk factors, inducing factors and course] [Article in Danish] Hansen SE, Christensen TH, Kryger P. Bispebjerg Hospital, K?benhavn, reumatologisk afdeling H. Forty-seven women with osteoporotic fractures of the spine were examined consecutively. The age range was 64-91 years with a median of 77 years. Risk factors for osteoporosis such as induced menopause or gastric resection were not present. Four patients had had rheumatoid arthritis. 19% had been treated with glucocorticoid. Onl...

Radiation exposures are typically characterized by two quantities. The first is the absorbed dose, or the energy deposited per unit mass for specific types of radiation passing through specified materials. The same amount of energy deposited in material by two different types of radiation, however, can result in two different levels of risk. Because of this, for the purpose of radiation protection operations, absorbed dose is modified by a second factor intended to normalize the risk associated with a given exposure. We present here an inter-co...
Abstract New information technologies have brought public-sector higher education institutions (HEIs) into increased competition, while their government funding in parallel has been continually eroded. In response to these growing pressures, there has been a call for HEIs to improve operational efficiency and to reduce duplication of resources by implementing advanced information systems that span the institution and improve processes. In response, HEIs have turned their efforts to implementing complex enterprise resource planning (ERP) system...
