AN OSTEOSARCOMA OF THE FEMORAL DIAPHYSIS ASSOCIATED WITH THE PRESENCE OF A BONE PLATE IN A DOG: A bone tumor which developed in the middle third of the left femur of an Irish Setter, seven years after a metallic plate had been used to reduce a fracture, is described. Through radiographs, the tumor was found to involve the diaphysis of the bone. The histopathology revealed that it was an osteosarcoma. Spontaneous and induced osteosarcomas are compared, and the possible correlation between the development of a tumor of this nature and the use of ...
Three mammalian eukaryotic initiation factors (eIF) are required for the ATP-dependent binding of mRNA to the 40 S ribosomal subunit. These three factors, eIF-4A, eIF-4B, and eIF-4F, have also been isolated from wheat germ. Three assays were used to measure the ability of the wheat germ factors to interact with and/or substitute for the mammalian factors. Two assay systems were used to measure partial reactions involving the interaction of the three factors, ATP, and mRNA: 1) RNA-dependent ATP hydrolysis and 2) cross-linking of the factors to t...
The similarity of sex pili mediated by F factors and R(fi(+)) factors and the ability of R(fi(+)) factors to control by repression the functioning of pilus genes encoded by the F factor suggested that F factors and R(fi(+)) factors are closely related. Further comparisons of the episomal properties of F factors and R(fi(+)) factors, however, indicated many differences. F factors contain information for a restriction system for phages phiII and T7. Cells containing R factors are sensitive to these phages. Furthermore, R(fi(+)) factors do not rep...
In the course of a general population survey in Mirano (Venice), Northern Italy, a random sample of 1,903 subjects (50.1% men) aged 20-59 was examined. Fifty-five were diabetic (fasting plasma glucose greater than or equal to 140 mg/dl or diagnosed by a physician) and 1,670 non-diabetic subjects (fasting plasma glucose below 110 mg/dl). In this paper an assessment was made on the more frequent occurrence of coronary risk factors (serum cholesterol and triglycerides, body mass index (BMI), systolic blood pressure, cigarette smoking) and, in part...
Bovine hypothalamus-derived growth factors (HDGF), pituitary fibroblast growth factor (FGF), and brain FGF were analyzed by chromatography on immobilized heparin and tested for the ability to stimulate the proliferation of capillary endothelial (CE) cells. Two distinct CE cell growth factors were found in hypothalamus, one anionic (aHDGF; pI of about 5) and one cationic (cHDGF; pI of about 8). Both aHDGF and cHDGF adhered tightly to immobilized heparin. They were eluted with 0.9-1.1 M NaCl and 1.3-1.5 M NaCl, respectively. Pituitary and brain F...
It is now well established that normal development and function of testis are mediated by endocrine and paracrine pathways including hormones, growth factors and cytokines as well as by direct cell-to-cell contacts depending on tight, adhering and gap junctions. In the last two decades, several growth factors were identified in the testis of various mammalian species. Growth factors are shown to promote cell proliferation, regulate tissue differentiation, and modulate organogenesis. Interestingly, most of these peptides are expressed not only i...
