Abstract Prostate cancer is a disease with a long natural history. Differences in survival outcomes as indicators of inappropriate surgery would take decades to appear. Therefore, the evaluation of the excised specimen according to defined parameters provides a more reasonable and timely assessment of surgical quality. There are currently a number of very different surgical approaches. Some uniform guidelines and quality assessment measuring readily available parameters would be desirable to establish a standard for comparison of surgical appr...
A new quantitative antiglobulin consumption (QAC) test for the measurement of platelet-associated IgG is described. In this test washed platelets are incubated with anti-IgG at a final dilution of 1:2 million. The unneutralized fraction of anti-IgG remaining in solution is then measured with an Autoanalyzer and soluble IgG is used for calibration. The dose-response curves depicting the percent neutralization of anti-IgG by platelets and by soluble IgG were compared in detail and found to be nearly identical, indicating that platelet-associated ...

Abstract This work compares the results of clinical studies (a H215O study with three stimulations, 2 measurements of the [18F]fluorodopa uptake in the striata and a cerebral [18F]FDG study) acquired on an ECAT 953B in the 3D mode without and with the estimation of true method (ETM) for scatter correction. Results obtained in 3D have been compared to those measured in 2D mode for the same volunteers. The results of the H215O study performed on one subject with a single activation, show that, with the ETM correction, higher activation signal ar...
DAPI as a useful stain for nuclear quantitation. Tarnowski BI, Spinale FG, Nicholson JH. Department of Pathology, Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston 29425. A simple-to-use fluorescent stain, 4',6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI), visualizes nuclear DNA in both living and fixed cells. DAPI staining was used to determine the number of nuclei and to assess gross cell morphology. Following light microscopic analyses, the stained cells were processed for electron microscopy. Cells stained with DAPI showed no ultrastructural changes c...
Quantitation of model digestive mixtures by 13C NMR. Wang D, Hadipour NL, Jerlin EA, Stark RE. Department of Chemistry, College of Staten Island, City University of New York 10301. 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra were obtained at 50.3 and 100.5 MHz for methanolic and aqueous mixtures of sodium taurocholate, 1-monocapryloyl-rac-glycerol, and caprylic acid. Distortionless Enhancement by Polarization Transfer (DEPT) was used to improve spectral sensitivity and resolution, and to generate calibration curves for quantitative determin...
Autoradiographic quantitation of radiolabeled proteoglycans. Lammi MJ, Tammi M. Department of Anatomy, University of Kuopio, Finland. Radiolabeled proteoglycans or glycosaminoglycans were precipitated with the cationic dye safranin O onto a sheet of nitrocellulose filter using a dot-blot apparatus. An autoradiography film was exposed against the nitrocellulose sheet. The developed film and the nitrocellulose sheet were separately digitized in a flat-bed-gray-scale scanner connected to a microcomputer. An image analysis program of the microco...
Acquisition and quantitation in proton spectroscopy. Luyten PR, Mari?n AJ, den Hollander JA. Philips Medical Systems, Best, The Netherlands. Localized proton NMR spectroscopy in the human brain is one of the more technically advanced applications of human in vivo NMR spectroscopy. Spin/echo techniques introduced reliable localization procedures, whereas the introduction of phase encoding techniques improved the spatial information content considerably. Using the sensitivity of the 1H NMR signal, a spatial resolution of 7 X 7 X 15 mm can be o...
