The debate between Simulation-Theory (ST) and Theory-Theory (TT) provides the dominant theoretical framework for research on "theory of mind" (ToM). Behavioural research has failed to provide clear methods for discriminating between these theories, but a number of recent studies have claimed that neuroimaging methods do allow key predictions of ST and TT to be tested. In the current paper it is argued that neuroimaging studies have not in fact provided any data that discriminates between ST and TT accounts of propositional attitude ascription, ...
Many different theories of ageing have been proposed, based often on highly specific molecular causes. Recent advances in evolutionary theory support the idea that ageing is caused by progressive accumulation of defects, but indicate that multiple processes are likely to operate in parallel. This calls for an understanding of ageing and longevity in terms of a network of maintenance processes that controls the capability of the system to preserve homeostasis. Here we develop a theoretical model which begins the task of implementing a Network Th...
Nursing and social science scholars have examined the compatibility between feminist and grounded theory traditions in scientific knowledge generation, concluding that they are complementary, yet not without certain tensions. This line of inquiry is extended to propose a critical feminist grounded theory methodology. The construction of symbolic interactionist, feminist, and critical feminist variants of grounded theory methodology is examined in terms of the presuppositions of each tradition and their interplay as a process of theoretical tria...
In the next years the market for low value online content, like music and videos, is expected to grow substantially. To allow ?pay-per-use ? of such content, micropayment systems are expected to play an important role. Since there are already many competing micropayment systems on the market, customers and merchants are forced to use multiple systems. To overcome the problems associated with using multiple systems, the research presented in this paper builds upon the idea of payment gateways that interconnect these systems. We introduce a gener...

A comparison is made of three methods for modeling the interaction of a laser probe beam with the temperature field of a thermal wave. The three methods include: (1) a new method based on complex ray theory, which allows us to take into account the disturbance of the amplitude and phase of the electric field of the probe beam, (2) the ray deflection averaging theory of Aamodt and Murphy, and (3) the wave theory (WT) of Glazov and Muratikov. To carry out this comparison, it is necessary to reformulate the description of the photodeflection signa...
We have calculated the intermolecular interaction potentials of the silane dimer at the D3d conformation using the Hartree-Fock (HF) self-consistent theory, the correlation-corrected second-order Møller-Plesset (MP2) perturbation theory, and the density functional theory (DFT) with 108 functionals chosen from the combinations of 9 exchange and 12 correlation functionals. Single-point coupled cluster [CCSD(T)] calculations have also been carried out to calibrate the correlation effect. The HF calculations yield unbound potentials largely becaus...
The free energies of solvation of six nucleic acid bases (adenine, cytosine, hypoxanthine, guanine, thymine, and uracil) in water and chloroform are calculated using CM2 class IV charges and SM5.42R atomic surface tensions. Using any of three approximations to the electronic wave function (AM1, Hartree-Fock, or DFT), we obtain good agreement with experiment for five cases where the experimental results are known for the partition coefficients between the two solvents. Decomposition of the solvation effects into bulk electrostatic contributions ...
A theoretical framework of existential coherence is presented, explaining how health, quality of life (QOL), and the ability to function were originally created and developed to rehabilitate human life from an existential perspective. The theory is inspired by the work of Aaron Antonovsky and explains our surprising recent empirical findings -- that QOL, health, and ability primarily are determined by our consciousness. The theory is a matrix of nine key elements in five layers: (1) coherence; (2) purpose and talent; (3) consciousness, love, an...
