    • Abstract:  Abstract. In this paper we consider a restricted class of polyominoes that we call Z-convex polyominoes. Z-convex polyominoes are polyominoes such that any two pairs of cells can be connected by a monotone path making at most two turns (like the letter Z). In particular they are convex polyominoes, but they appear to resist standard decompositions. We propose a construction by ?inflation ? that allows to write a system of functional equations for their generating functions. The generating function P(t) of Z-convex polyominoes with respect to the semi-perimeter turns out to be algebraic all the same and surprisingly, like the generating function of convex polyominoes, it can be expressed as a rational function of t and the generating function of Catalan numbers. 1.

        • In "Safe House," cars and guns get the best lines
LOS ANGELES, Feb 9 (TheWrap.com) - The term "action porn" gets thrown around rather haphazardly, but it's rare that a movie embodies the term quite as strongly as "Safe House." The scenes of fighting, shooting, and car-chasing are all quite breathtaking, but you'll be twitching for the fast-forward button during the seemingly endless sequences of plot development and dialogue that connect all ...

While most box-office watchers believe ...

OTTAWA (Reuters) - For Brits grappling with the idea of Scottish independence, it may be worth looking across the Atlantic. That referendum - narrowly won by the pro-Canada camp with just 50.6 percent of the vote - has an important lesson for Scots keen to end Scotland's 300-year union with England, and for ...
