A non-parametric procedure for Cattell's scree test is proposed, using the bootstrap method. Bentler and Yuan developed parametric tests for the linear trend of scree eigenvalues in principal component analysis. The proposed method is for cases where parametric assumptions are not realistic. We define the break in the scree trend in several ways, based on linear slopes defined with two or three consecutive eigenvalues, or all eigenvalues after the k largest. The resulting scree test statistics are evaluated under various data conditions, among ...
Most research on the biological effects of Pleistocene glaciation and refugia has been undertaken in the northern hemisphere and focuses on lowland taxa. Using single-strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) analysis and sequencing of mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I, we explored the intraspecific phylogeography of a flightless orthopteran (the alpine scree weta, Deinacrida connectens) that is adapted to the alpine zone of South Island, New Zealand. We found that several mountain ranges and regions had their own reciprocally monophyletic, deep...
Abstract This essay addresses the question: how can the meta cognitive layer be referenced by higher cognitive models? and proposes an answer: the cognitive prism mechanism. We examine the micro-activity of the mind, the activity of a neuron, and introduce the notion of cognitive prism mechanism; after that we show that such mechanism also exists in the spatial model in the meta cognitive layer. We further collect evidences in metaphor to show that our everyday language is referenced to spatial domain and how such references can be understood ...

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive impairment has been reported in elderly bipolar disorder (BD) patients, however, few studies have evaluated middle-aged and older BD patients using standardized cognitive assessments and none (to our knowledge) analysed middle-aged and older BD patients with recent cognitive complaints. The main objective of this study is to characterize the cognitive deficits of middle-aged and older patients with BD and compare them with the common age-related cognitive deficits observed in Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). METHODS: For th...
BACKGROUND: Little is known about how cognitive domains other than episodic memory are affected during the mild cognitive impairment (MCI) stage of Alzheimer's disease (AD). We attempted to clarify this issue in this study. METHODS: Fifty-seven Japanese subjects were divided into two groups: one comprising people in the MCI stage of AD (MCI group, n = 28) and the other of normal controls (NC group, n = 29). Cognitive functions were assessed using the Japanese version of the neurobehavioral cognitive status examination (J-COGNISTAT). RESULTS: Th...
This article is an attempt to situate imagination within consciousness complete with its own pre-cognitive, cognitive, and meta-cognitive domains. In the first sections we briefly review traditional philosophical and psychological conceptions of the imagination. The majority have viewed perception and imagination as separate faculties, performing distinct functions. A return to a phenomenological account of the imagination suggests that divisions between perception and imagination are transcended by precognitive factors of sense of reality and ...
This paper considers the suitability of the Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale-Cognitive Subscale (ADAS-cog) as the gold standard in registration trials of treatments for Alzheimer's disease. Working groups have recommended replacing the ADAS-cog if suitable automated alternatives can be found. This paper makes the case for the Cognitive Drug Research (CDR) computerised cognitive assessment system, as an example of a suitable instrument to replace the ADAS-cog. The CDR system has been widely used in dementia work for 20 years and shows good c...
In this review, the neuropsychological symptoms of different diseases in the elderly are described. After a brief explanation of relevant principles in the neuropsychological assessment of older individuals, a summary of the complex relation between ageing and cognition is presented. It may be concluded that cognitive decline is not an inevitable outcome of ageing, and may well be the result of unrecognised pathology. The term mild cognitive impairment is reserved for patients whose impairment is objectively demonstrable but is not pronounced i...
BACKGROUND: Several tests have been developed to examine performance of demented patients in daily life activities. However, most of them are based either on the subjective evaluation of performance by the patient him/herself, or on the reports of relatives. Functional Cognitive Assessment Scale (FUCAS) is a new reliable (alpha > 0.89 - 0.92) cognitive-behavioral scale that assesses executive function in daily life activities directly in patients with dementia. AIMS: This study aimed at testing FUCAS' internal consistency of items, criterion-re...
Abstract Cognitive map (CM), fuzzy cognitive map (FCM) are two related tools for modeling human being's cognition and facilitating machine deduction over the cognitive model accordingly. FCM has extended CM by modeling the strength of the causal relationship. To acquire the ability of modeling the strength of cause and effect, multi-value FCM (MVFCM) is formally presented in this paper, which uses mutli-value concepts. Not surprisingly, FCM is more complex than CM and MVFCM is more complex than FCM. This paper proves that there exists a theore...
An informant-rated cognitive screen may have the potential to reliably help detect early dementia. A valuable scale should have good interitem associations and strong reliability when tested in groups with and without cognitive impairment. Our scale, the Brief Cognitive Scale (BCS), consists of 18 questions designed to assess cognitive function that affects everyday activities. Each question is coded with one of four levels, ranging from no impairment to severe impairment. We administered this screen to 120 subjects: 26 controls, 28 with a diag...
The effects of changes in depression-relevant cognition were examined in relation to subsequent change in depressive symptoms for outpatients with major depressive disorder randomly assigned to cognitive therapy (CT; n = 32) versus those assigned to pharmacotherapy only (NoCT; n = 32). Depression severity scores were obtained at the beginning, middle, and end of the 12-week treatment period, as were scores on 4 measures of cognition: Attributional Styles Questionnaire (ASQ), Automatic Thoughts Questionnaire (ATQ), Dysfunctional Attitudes Scale ...
