  • Abstract:  With an estimated 200 million Internet users, the Internet has created communities that would /could not have formed otherwise providing access to interdisciplinary, heterogeneous groups. New modes of contacting research subjects as well as the social mobility provided by the new technologies confronts researchers with the need to revisit concepts such as interview, subject, field site, and informed consent. This paper will identify and elaborate these and other issues around using the Internet as a medium for qualitative research. The questions addressed by the paper include: What are the specific strengths and limitations of the Internet together with its related synchronous and asynchronous and both ?push ? and ?pull ? services that might impact on it as a research medium? What bearing does the global nature of the Internet as well as the changing technology have on ethical issues such as ensuring privacy and confidentiality, distinguishing between private vs. public information, incorporating informed consent without confounding the dynamics of the on-line target group and providing full disclosure of the possible risks when these may be changing as the technology advances? With an anticipated billion Internet users by 2005, what are the implications for sampling given the rapidly changing demographics of those who

  • This paper reports a study that investigated the effects of gender, Internet anxiety, and Internet identification on use of the Internet. The study involved 608 undergraduate students (490 females and 118 males). We surveyed the students' experience with the Internet, as well as their levels of Internet anxiety and Internet identification. We found a number of gender differences in participants' use of the Internet. Males were proportionally more likely to have their own web page than were females. They used the Internet more than females; in p...

  • Theory and research suggest that Internet identification may account for some of the gender divide in Internet use. Internet identification is a type of domain identification, and is inherently bound with images of those who use the Internet, a domain traditionally conceived as masculine. Combining the "draw an Internet user" test with an Internet identification scale, this study tests two hypotheses: participants drawing gender-concordant images will (i) identify with and (ii) use the Internet more than those drawing gender-discordant images. ...

  • This study examines the associations of harmonious passion (HP) and obsessive passion (OP) for Internet activities with Eysenckian personality dimensions in a sample of 421 university students. Results show that psychoticism correlates positively with both HP and OP; extroversion correlates positively with HP only; and neuroticism has no correlation with passion for Internet activities. Additionally, the study examines participants' tendency to express their "true self" on the Internet, and the results reveal that this tendency has a positive a...

A relationship between these psychological disorders appears to exist. No links have been established between Internet dependence and eating disorders. METHOD: Fifty-four Internet dependents were compared with a control group concerning symptomatic aspects of eating disorders and psychological characteristics related to eating disorders. They all belonged to 1199 respondents of Chine...
