Abstract:Collaborative feasibility study of a biphasic system (Roche Septi-Chek AFB) for rapid detection and isolation of mycobacteria. Isenb erg HD, D'Amato RF, Heifets L, Murray PR, Scardamaglia M, Jacobs MC, Alperstein P, Niles A. Division of Microbiology, Long Island Jewish Medical Center, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, New Hyde Park, New York 11042-1433. A study to delineate the feasibility of a biphasic-culture approach for detection and isolation of mycobacteria from clinical specimens except blood was conducted in four medical centers. The biphasic system (Septi-Chek AFB, Roche Diagnostic Systems, Nutley, N.J.) was compared with conventional mycobacterial isolation media and the BACTEC system. Septi-Chek AFB showed the highest degree of mycobacterial recovery. In addition, Septi-Chek AFB consistently shortened the time required for recovery of mycobacteria from clinical specimens and supported the growth of small inoculum numbers of stock cultures of 14 mycobacterial species. The study indicates the feasibility and potential advantages of the biphasic approach for detection and isolation of mycobacteria. PMID: 1761694 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE] PMCID: PMC270189
Abstract This paper reviews several user experiences that researchers at the University of Arizona have had in building Internet-based tools to support collaborative writing. First, the technological framework for an advanced collaborative writing tool called Collaboratus is presented. Next, we review the tools that make up Collaboratus, and then provide an overview of the various user experiences we have had. Finally, many suggestions are provided for developing the next generation of collaborative writing tools.

OpenExperiment is a user-configurable open environment that supports collaborative experimental design and execution on the Internet. The environment is created with few simple configurations of a generic client.
Wireless systems operating in the ISM frequency bands and sharing the same environment are likely to interfere with each other. We address the problem of coexistence between IEEE 802.11 and IEEE 802.15 devices, and we present a mechanism that mitigates the interference between these devices when IEEE 802.15 supports voice traffic. The proposed scheme can work when 802.11 and 802.15 devices operate in non-collaborative mode, i.e., independently of one another. The performance of the proposed algorithm is compared to the results obtained through ...

Abstract In a collaborative virtual environment (CVE), users need to do some collaborative work, which is highly synchronous. To achieve effective collaboration, the level of simulation accuracy (LOA) of a user's behavior in CVE must be high. However, if we adopt a static high LOA, a system's scalability is greatly decreased. Thus a scalability request must compromise with a collaborative request. The paper analyses a CVE system's scalability request and collaborative request, and presents a classification of collaborative work and a definitio...
This paper presents some results of our recent research work towards an infrastructure for Internet-enabled collaborative agent systems. The infrastructure and the related supporting services, components, prototypes and mechanisms are initially proposed and developed for Internet-enabled collaborative agent systems in all kinds of application areas, but they are primarily targeted for implementing Internet-enabled collaborative enterprises or supply chain management systems. The general collaborative agent system architecture with the basic com...
Collaborative filtering (CF) and contentbased filtering (CBF) have widely been used in information filtering applications, both approaches having their individual strengths and weaknesses. This paper proposes a novel probabilistic framework to unify CF and CBF, named collaborative ensemble learning.
Abstract Collaborative infrastructures are emerging as one of the key elements to enable collaborative applications for human-centric collaboration. These infrastructures have to provide the system components needed by the collaborative applications and, at the same time, comply with service orientation architectures principles. This paper discuss the main results of the consultation process carried out since beginning 2006 in order to identify the 12 research challenges on this area and the three building blocks needed for collaborative work ...
