  • Abstract:  [Nosology and ultrasound findings in porencephaly] [Arti cle in German] Mielke R, Lu JH, Kowalewski S. Abteilung f?r Neonatologie, Universit?ts-Kinderk linik Bonn. Congenital cerebral defects can be classified into two groups of porencephaly. Agenetic porencephaly results from development disturbances during early neuronal migration and can often be observed in the region of the fissura Sylvii. Encephaloclastic porencephaly, which is relatively rare, is a late prenatal or perinatal vascular lesion due to arterial ischemic stroke or venous thrombosis, and is located in the supply areas of the vessels involved. Cerebral defects can always be detected by ultrasonography. High resolution ultrasonic instruments or magnetic resonance imaging are appropriate means to find out disturbed patterns of gyration pointing to early fetal developmental disturbances. Scientific Objectivity and Psychiatric Nosology
  • Scientific Objectivity and Psychiatric Nosology

  • This paper challenges the traditional conception of objectivity in science by arguing that its singular focus on evidential relations and search for aperspectivalism renders it inadequate. Through an examination of psychiatric nosology, I argue that interesting and unique problems arise that challenge this conception of objectivity and that these challenges cannot be met by this account. However, a social practice account of objectivity provides a much more successful way of thinking about values and objectivity in psychiatric nosology. Moreove...

The nosology of dementia.
  • The nosology of dementia.

  • The nosology of dementia has evolved from the simple distinctions between senility, degenerative dementia, and vascular insults that existed a few decades ago. The differentiation of normal cognitive aging from very mild dementia has sharpened considerably; however, appreciation of the heterogeneity of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and its clinical and pathologic overlap with other dementing disorders has blurred previous classification systems. Rather than viewing AD and vascular dementia, for example, as dichotomous entities, it may be more releva...

[Semiology and nosology]
  • [Semiology and nosology]

  • While distinguishing three successive steps in the making of a diagnosis, the authors point out the premises of modern semiology. They refer to the work of K. Schneider (pragmatic approach), Jaspers, Bleuler and Janzarik (approach based on theoretical concepts), Kasanin and finally Langfeldt (empirical approach). Current approaches of semiology try to define diagnostic criteria. In that line of thinking, the school of Vienna, while establishing the insufficiency of all systems, proposes the adoption of a polydiagnostic approach that would event...

The nosology of parapsoriasis.
  • The nosology of parapsoriasis.

  • Parapsoriasis is a group of uncommon but not rare disorders that was created in 1902 as part of a now long forgotten scheme to classify all inflammatory dermatoses. This artificial grouping has led to an enormously confused nosology of these disorders, that are, for the most part, otherwise unrelated. The use of a number of different terms at different institutions and by different physicians to denote the same diseases, together with the use of particular, single terms to denote different diseases, has caused much unnecessary confusion. In thi...
