  • Abstract:  Abstract An oxidation apparatus is described which continuously records the volume of oxygen absorbed by a sample of oil, in a closed system, maintained at constant temperature and pressure. The apparatus is automated through the use of a specially devised liquid level probe and other ancillary equipment such as recorders, timers, and temperature controllers. The apparatus can be used to compare the relative oxidation stability of various lubricants over a wide range of operating conditions.

  • In spite of the pathological significance of oxidation of plasma lipids, no method is currently available for the evaluation of the susceptibility of these lipids to oxidation in unfractionated plasma. Here we demonstrate that copper-induced oxidation of diluted plasma, in the presence of citrate can be monitored continuously by recording the absorbance at 245 nm. The kinetics of accumulation of oxidation products in unfractionated plasma is a sum of lipid oxidation products obtained in low and high density lipoproteins isolated from the same p...

  • The treatment of enrofloxacin synthetic wastewaters using conductive-diamond electrochemical oxidation (CDEO), ozonation and Fenton oxidation has been studied. Results show that the three technologies can reduce the organic content of enrofloxacin synthetic wastewaters but with different performances. CDEO was the most efficient technology in terms of mineralization but not on COD removal, which was more efficiently achieved by ozonation. This indicates that ozonation is efficient in the breakage of the complex molecules but not on the removal ...

  • In this paper, the application of Fenton and Oxone/Co(2+) oxidation processes for landfill leachate treatment was investigated. The removal of the chemical oxygen demand (COD), suspended substances (SS) and the color of the landfill leachate by Fenton oxidation to that by Oxone/Co(2+) oxidation were compared under optimal operational conditions. For Fenton oxidation process, the optimal conditions were determined as: [H(2)O(2)]=80 mmol L(-1), [H(2)O(2)]/[Fe(2+)]=2.0, initial pH=2.5, reaction temperature=37.5+/-1 degrees C, reaction time=160 min...

  • The stratum corneum is located at the interface between body and environment and thus is constantly exposed to a pro-oxidative environment. Previously, we have demonstrated that stratum corneum lipids are targets of oxidative stress induced by ozone and by ultraviolet A and B exposure. Here, we employed an immunoblotting technique to detect protein oxidation in human stratum corneum obtained by tape stripping. After lysis, protein carbonyl groups were measured by derivatization with dinitrophenylhydrazine, separation by sodium dodecylsulfate-po...

  • Immediately after birth, glycolysis and lactate oxidation are the major source of ATP production in the rabbit heart. Although the ability of heart to oxidize fatty acid increases within days, glucose oxidation rates remain low in the first week after birth. To further examine the changes in energy substrate use in the newborn period, we developed a right and left ventricular isolated working heart model, in which 2-wk-old rabbit hearts were perfused with buffer containing 11 mM glucose, 0.8 mM palmitate, 0.5 mM lactate, and 100 microU/mL insul...

  • We investigated the influence of glycated low density lipoprotein (LDL) for vascular smooth muscle cell (SMC) proliferation or injury. We utilized glycated, slightly oxidized LDL (GLDL-LOX), glycated, auto-oxidized LDL (GLDL) and glycated, metal-induced extensively oxidized LDL (GLDL-OX) to examine the effect of glycation itself or combined glycation and oxidation on SMC. GLDL-LOX induced SMC proliferation and migration, and increased the number of platelet-derived growth factor receptor, beta subunits, (PDGF-R) positive SMC. Also, GLDL-LOX pro...

  • The purpose of this study was to understand better the factors providing oxidation resistance to human low-density lipoprotein (LDL). Therefore, the susceptibility to copper-induced in vitro oxidation of LDL from vitamin E deficient patients and normal healthy subjects was studied. Surprisingly, the LDL of vitamin E deficient patients appeared less susceptible to oxidation than control LDL. Both oxidation rate and extent of oxidation, measured as diene production, were reduced when compared to control LDL. The lag time, a measure of resistance ...
