Radiative recombination transitions into the ground state of cooled bare and hydrogenlike uranium ions were measured at the storage ring ESR. By comparing the corresponding x-ray centroid energies, this technique allows for a direct measurement of the electron-electron contribution to the ionization potential in the heaviest He-like ions. For the two-electron contribution to the ionization potential of He-like uranium we obtain a value of 2248+/-9 eV. Electron radiation damage is one of the most severe problems in high resolution electron microscopy by biomolecules. The techniques of electron diffraction and electron energy-loss spectroscopy were applied to gain a better understanding of radiation damage in amino acids and nucleic acid bases. The results when compared with G-values for the release of ammonia and hydrogen sulphide from amino acids seem to indicate that bond scission is an important cause of radiation damage at moderate doses of irradiation. A discrete dynode electron multiplier with radial flux of electrons was built and tested in the range of low-voltage scanning electron microscopy as a backscattered electron detector of topographic contrast. A three-terminal device formed by two electrostatic barriers crossing an asymmetrically patterned two-dimensional electron gas displays an unusual potential depression at the middle contact, yielding absolute negative resistance. The device displays momentum and current transfer ratios that far exceed unity. The observed reversal of the current or potential in the middle terminal can be interpreted as the analog of Bernoulli's effect in a Fermi liquid. The results are explained by directional scattering of electrons in two dimensions.
Three strict constraints upon the electron-electron repulsion energy functional of the one-electron reduced density matrix (the 1-matrix) are obtained by combining its invariance and stationary properties with the extended Koopmans' theorem. Electron transfer to 5-bromouracil (5-BrU) from nucleobase (N) electron adducts (and their protonated forms) has been studied by product analysis and pulse radiolysis.
