  • Abstract:  Abstract Multimedia is variously and often ambiguously defined. While most people might accept a mix of voice, text and graphics, they might resist calling a live lecture on a titled work of art a multimedia presentation. On the other hand, many definitions focus entirely on technology: multimedia seems to be defined by the hardware required rather than by the user's experience. For example, despite the statement that any computer application that employs a video disk, images from a CD-ROM, uses high-quality sound, or uses high-quality video images on a screen may be termed a multimedia application, the author doubts that anyone would use the term multimedia for a computer application that merely plays a piece of music. She suggests a model of media objects that does not refer to technology or interactivity, but rather concentrates on the nature of the text. This model provides a useful basis for defining multimedia communication securely and unambiguously

  • An Architecture for Video on Demand Agent-Mediated Electronic Commerce

  • A Video on Demand system (VoD) is a distributed multimedia application that allows a user, through a remote terminal (e.g. a television and a set-top box), to access a video catalog composed of videos stored in several servers distributed in a network. Since the customer has total freedom in choosing which video program he/she will watch and also in which

  • On RT-LOTOS and its application to the formal design of multimedia protocols 0

  • The paper is devoted to the presentation of a new formal description technique RT-LOTOS (Real-Time LOTOS) which is a temporal extension of the standard formal description technique LOTOS. After a brief introduction to LOTOS, the first part of the paper describes the main features of RT-LOTOS both informally by means of simple examples and formally by detailing its operational semantics and stating some important properties of the model. The second part of the paper shows the applicability of RT-LOTOS for the formal design of multimedia protocol...

  • This paper discusses different design possibilities of multimedia collaborative environments. The main function of such environments is to share multimedia resources among several geographically distributed users. To optimize the use of bandwidth and compensate for latency, we have chosen an approach that sends as small amount of information as possible for the updates, namely events. Therefore, we will describe six different architectures to achieve such a goal. These prototypes (jStreaming, JETS, JASMINE, JASBER and two Collaborative Virtual ...

Defining needs, defining systems: a critical analysis.
  • Defining needs, defining systems: a critical analysis.

  • This article examines the model of need assessment commonly used in social service programs for older adults. Whereas this model defines need as an individual attribute, remediable through programmatic intervention, an alternative formulation suggests that organizational imperatives shape the definition of client need while obscuring their own role in the production of this information. A case study and historical analysis assess the roots of this process and its consequences for clients, staff, and aging programs.

  • With the growth of the computing power of personal computer and the proliferation of broadband access to the Internet, media streaming has widely diffused. The high bandwidth required by live streaming multimedia greatly limits the number of clients that can be served by a source using unicast. IP Multicast should be a good solution to this problem, but the fact that the current Internet does not widely support IP Multicast force us to find other ways. Another existing solution is the proxy caching technique that can accomplish effective media ...

  • OBJECTIVE: In order to define clear urodynamic obstruction, all patients from unclassified zone of the nomograms are to be allocated in the zone of obstruction or out of obstruction combining the parameters of different nomograms. Then, to analyze difference of the physical and radiological variables between obstructed and unobstructed groups. Finally, to determine the percentage of the patients with additional urinary bladder co morbidities in clear obstruction zone. SAMPLE AND METHODOLOGY: 102 patients with proved BPE underwent complete urody...

  • PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Effective antiretroviral therapy use has resulted in a large number of older individuals living with HIV. Recent literature is reviewed with respect to the incidence and risk factors for cancer in HIV patients. RECENT FINDINGS: Previous studies have demonstrated substantial declines in AIDS-defining malignancies in the era of antiretroviral therapy, with clear links to better immune function. Increases in non-AIDS-defining malignancies such as Hodgkin's disease, skin, lung, anal, and kidney cancers have been noted by some but...

  • BACKGROUND: The extent to which mortality differs following individual acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)-defining events (ADEs) has not been assessed among patients initiating combination antiretroviral therapy. METHODS: We analyzed data from 31,620 patients with no prior ADEs who started combination antiretroviral therapy. Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate mortality hazard ratios for each ADE that occurred in >50 patients, after stratification by cohort and adjustment for sex, HIV transmission group, number of antir...

  • OBJECTIVE: To evaluate deaths from AIDS-defining malignancies (ADM) and non-AIDS-defining malignancies (nADM) in the D:A:D Study and to investigate the relationship between these deaths and immunodeficiency. DESIGN: Observational cohort study. METHODS: Patients (23 437) were followed prospectively for 104 921 person-years. We used Poisson regression models to identify factors independently associated with deaths from ADM and nADM. Analyses of factors associated with mortality due to nADM were repeated after excluding nADM known to be associated...

  • In this paper, I examine how scientific disciplines define their boundaries by defining the publics with whom they engage. The case study is an episode in the development of early American sociology. In response to the dual challenge of credibility set up by the conflict between religious Baconian science and secular positivist science, key actors engaged in specific strategies of boundary-work to create their desired "sociological public"--a hybrid form of science-public relations that appealed to hostile university scientists while excluding ...
