Abstract: Abstract Various strategies for achieving fault tolerance in large scale control systems are discussed. The positive and negative impacts of distribution through network communication are presented. The ATOMOS framework for standardized reliable marine automation is presented along with the corresponding reliability issues. A generic framework for simulation of network traffic under fault conditions is suggested and the first practical experiences from a prototype implementation are reported.
