    • Abstract:  Abstract The H-ANIM TOOLBOX is a Java applet containing a collection of easy-to-use tools to create 3D actors for Web applications. The generated actors have a scenegraph-based VRML/X3D structure with a skeleton-like joint-segment hierarchy complying with the H-Anim standard. A variety of actors is supported: from simple segmented models with predefined animations via organic bodies with seamless deformations up to personalized avatars with specific head geometry and face texture

        • For Houston mourners, a dearth of places to grieve
In Whitney Houston's hometown, her family plans a private church service, with no public memorial set. In Los Angeles, where she died, there's not even a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for fans to pile flowers. So for the legion of music lovers mourning a global superstar, where do broken hearts go?

        • Purgatory of a Medical Label
In my last post, I shared how doctors decide codes for medical billing.  Basically, the more they do, the more they get paid.  Of course, for a higher code to be charged, the patient must have a medical problem of sufficient severity to warrant that higher code.  Fair enough.  But that results in “medical labels” that follow people around for the rest of their life.  How does this affect the ...

TORONTO (Reuters) - Canadian stocks ended at their lowest level in nearly a month on Tuesday, undermining the big gains they made at the start of the year, as mining and energy issues slid on a fresh round of euro zone credit downgrades and on concern about slowing U.S. retail sales. Market confidence in the U.S. economy slipped after data showed retail sales rose less than forecast in January ...

        • Sacramento-area families buy meat raised locally, with a message
Part of a growing movement nationwide, Joshua Lurie-Terrell and Jineui Hong are doing their shopping the old-fashioned way, albeit with some newfangled twists – sending out emails to friends, pooling their money, logging onto an area farm's website to size up the product and then placing the order.
        • A year on, Libyans enjoy freedoms but anxieties abound
TRIPOLI (Reuters) - Libyan jewellery shopkeeper Hassan El-Kekli used to be careful what he said on the phone to his family and friends. Any criticism of Muammar Gaddafi's regime was off-limits for fear security officials listening in could show up at his home and arrest him. "Before we couldn't say anything, we were frightened," the 35-year-old said. "Now I can talk about anything." A year after ...

President Barack Obama's new budget lays down the political themes he will pound as he campaigns for re-election — more spending on jobs and higher taxes for the wealthy. It sets him apart from the Republican contenders and gives Democrats a platform to run on.
