    • Abstract:  Abstract A design is presented for the storage component of a self-recovering distributed operating system. This component consists of an object manager, which maintains objects on main memory and on the disk, and a recovery layer, which incorporates a collection of highly optimized algorithms based on optimistic recovery. With optimistic recovery it is possible for a machine (or collection of machines) to present a fault-free interface to programs running on it (or them), making all data appear to be persistent. The optimizations presented make it possible to do this at a cost no higher than that of transaction systems

        • A Royal Visit but Little Change for Riot-Scarred North London Community
A working-class pub might be the last place you'd expect to run into a royal. But during a recent visit to the Pride of Tottenham, Charles and Camilla showed that they do more than hunt pheasants and wear silly hats. The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall stopped by the pub as part of their Feb. 9 tour of the riot-scarred north London community of Tottenham, where the unrest that engulfed ...
        • A year on, only brief home visits for Japan nuclear evacuees
OKUMA, Japan (Reuters) - Back home for just three hours, a tearful Miyoko Takeda sorted through her belongings. She left behind the kimonos she once wore as a traditional dancer, fearful they might be contaminated by radiation. Nearly a year has passed since a massive 9.0 magnitude earthquake hit Japan, Okuma town, but the site of the reactors at the centre of the Fukushima nuclear crisis ...

        • Japan's big GDP drop a worry for PM tax plan
TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan's economy shrank much more-than-expected in the fourth quarter, as Thai floods, a strong yen and weak demand hurt exports, casting doubt on hopes for a quick pick up in activity that could bolster government plans to raise the sales tax. Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda needs to persuade a skeptical public that the economy is strong enough to double the sales tax without ...
        • As Xi visits, China's U.S. crop demand a balm for tensions
DES MOINES, Iowa (Reuters) - China is half a world away from the 2,300-acre family farm in east-central Iowa where John Weber and his son plant corn and soybeans. But 62-year-old Weber is among a number of Iowa farmers who are benefiting as rising incomes in China lead to demand for billions of dollars of American farm goods. "There are huge opportunities," said Weber, who in addition to his ...
        • Rebranding Sarkozy: Too sullied a sell for 2012?
PARIS (Reuters) - In February 2007, a fiery Nicolas Sarkozy had millions convinced that he - a go-getter abandoned as an infant by his Hungarian father - would break with the past, end chronic unemployment and restore a sense of pride to France. His luster began fading within hours of his May 6 election win, as he celebrated with corporate chiefs and pop stars at a gaudy nightspot and set a ...

        • Marc Jacobs' runway lands in a mystical forest
Marc Jacobs, always the showman, turned his New York Fashion Week show into a mystical forest Monday night, presenting his fall collection amid an old-school fairy tale, complete with characters wearing oversized fur hats and embellished big-buckle shoes. There were hints of Victoriana, with bustles tacked on to some of the dresses, and a sequined faux-fur coat that appeared to be covered in ...
        • How-tos of offshore accounts: first, get a million
Movie super spies James Bond and Jason Bourne use them. So do real-life presidential candidate Mitt Romney, who says he pays his taxes, and untold numbers of Americans who don't. Swiss banks and their secretive counterparts around the globe may sound like the exclusive province of the wealthy, the mysterious or the shady, but anybody can legally open an offshore account.
