  • Abstract:Abstract Presents a new method for long-term, noninvasive ambulatory monitoring of blood pressure waveforms without using a cuff. Measurements taken from plethysmographic sensors are integrated and processed by a Kalman filter. The blood pressure waveforms can be estimated based on these measurements despite the lack of observability

Signal strength versus cuff length in nerve cuff electrode recordings
  • Signal strength versus cuff length in nerve cuff electrode recordings

  • Abstract When a nerve cuff electrode is used for the recording of signals from peripheral nerves, cuff dimensions have to be chosen. Traditionally, the peak-to-peak amplitude of the single-fiber action potential (SFAP) is optimized through the choice of cuff diameter and cuff length. In this paper, the dependency of the root-mean-square (RMS) value of the nerve signal on the cuff dimensions was studied and compared with the peak-to-peak value of the SFAP. A simple approximation for signal optimization by cuff dimensioning is suggested. The res...

  • Ultrasonography of rotator cuff tears. Olive RJ Jr, Marsh HO. Department of Surgery, University of Kansas School of Medicine, Wichita. This is a prospective study of ultrasonography of the rotator cuff mechanism as an alternative to arthrography for screening rotator cuff tears. Seventy-two patients (40 men and 32 women) with possible rotator cuff tears were referred for shoulder arthrography. Before arthrography, bilateral shoulder sonography was performed by a technician under the direction of a radiologist. Arthrograms and sonograms were ...

  • The 'cuff-leak' test for extubation. Fisher MM, Raper RF. Intensive Therapy Unit, Royal North Shore Hospital, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. The 'cuff-leak' test, which involves demonstrating a leak around a tracheal tube with the cuff deflated, has been advocated to determine the safety of extubation in patients with upper airway obstruction. In 62 such patients we were able safely to extubate all patients with a cuff leak. Two patients extubated without cuff leak required reintubation and in five patients who repeatedly failed the tes...

Towards the Curvature Cuff of a Canal Surface
  • Towards the Curvature Cuff of a Canal Surface

  • By means of a special stereographic mapping, a sphere corresponds to a point in 4-space. A canal surface then corresponds to a curve in 4-space. The poster gives insights into this mapping and presents a construction of an osculating Dupin cyclide, which provides the principal curvatures for each generating circle of a curvature continuous canal surface. Basic idea A canal surface is the envelope of spheres, whose centers move on a so-called spine curve. These spheres will be mapped onto points in four-dimensional space, which we will call M. I...
