  • Abstract:Abstract Systematic Environmental Assessment (SEA) is a methodology used to investigate and document the known technical, political and environmental issues associated with design options and their potential impacts on IBM business operations. The purpose of this systematic assessment is to facilitate integration of environmental considerations into strategic business decisions. An SEA follows a prescribed process flowchart and generates an ultimate ranking of possible design alternatives based on their environmental preferability. This paper describes the process and elements of a Systematic Environmental Assessment and explains how IBM has benefited from its implementation

  • Abstract ENVI software package is widely used in hyperspectral data analysis. ENVI features a forest health tool, which creates a spatial map showing the overall health and vigor of a forested region. General and quantitative forest health index, capable of detecting different types of forest damages, would be very useful in forest monitoring. The main objective of this study was to assess forest health tool's capability to detect dust and seepage contaminated forest areas. These areas were classified using various combinations of vegetation i...

  • Such a modification is also necessary to process data from statistical databases, where, in order to maintain privacy, we only keep interval ranges instead of the actual numeric data (e.g., a salary range instead of the actual salary). Most resulting computational problems are NP-hard- which means, crudely speaking, that in general, no computationally efficient algorithm 1 can solve all particular cases of the corresponding problem. In this paper, we overview practical situations in which computationally efficient algorithms exist: e.g., situat...

  • In many areas of science and engineering, it is desirable to estimate statistical characteristics (mean, variance, covariance, etc.) under interval uncertainty. For example, we may want to use the measured values x(t) of a pollution level in a lake at different moments of time to estimate the average pollution level; however, we do not know the exact values x(t) ? e.g., if one of the measurement results is 0, this simply means that the actual (unknown) value of x(t) can be anywhere between 0 and the detection limit DL. We must therefore modify ...

  • Abstract This paper addresses a modified localization scheme of a wheeled mobile robot. When it navigates in a square given by the operator, the position error of a robot accumulates and it never ends up with the goal position where the robot intends to go to initially. The objective of localization is to estimate the position of a robot precisely. Many algorithms were developed and still are being researched for localization of a mobile robot at present. Among them, a localization algorithm named continuous localization proposed by Schultz (S...

  • The paper explores the power of two systematic Branch and Bound search algorithms that exploit partition-based heuristics, BBBT (a new algorithm for which the heuristic information is constructed during search and allows dynamic variable/value ordering) and its predecessor BBMB (for which the heuristic information is pre-compiled) and compares them against a number of popular local search algorithms for the MPE problem as well as against the recently popular iterative belief propagation algorithms. We show empirically that the new Branch and Bo...

  • Comment in: Br J Dermatol. 2007 Aug;157(2):425-6. Cochrane Skin Group systematic reviews are more methodologically rigorous than other systematic reviews in dermatology. Collier A, Heilig L, Schilling L, Williams H, Dellavalle RP. Department of Dermatology, University of Colorado at Denver and Health Sciences Center, Denver, CO, USA. BACKGROUND: The Cochrane collaboration aims to produce high-quality systematic reviews. It is not known whether the methods used in producing Cochrane Skin Group (CSG) reviews result in higher quality review...

  • The extensive use of open networks and distributed systems poses serious threats to the security of end-to-end communications and network components themselves. A necessary foundation for securing a network is the ability to reliably authenticate communication partners and other network entities. ne-way, password-based authentication techniques are not sufficient to cope with the issues at hand. Modern designs rely on two-way, cryptographic authentication protocols. However, most existing designs suffer from one or more limitations: they requir...
