Abstract: Plastic Surgery Department, Hospital Ramon y Cajal, Madrid, Spain.
AIMS/BACKGROUND: Replication errors (RERs) at microsatellite loci are associated with the development of not only hereditary nonpolyposis colon cancer but also sporadic cancers. To examine the association between RERs and human hepatocarcinogenesis, we looked for microsatellite instability in solitary and multiple primary hepatocellular carcinomas (HCCs). METHODS: DNAs were extracted from 34 solitary primary HCCs and 14 HCCs with multiple primary cancers. Twelve microsatellite alleles were amplified by PCR from the DNAs, and RERs were assessed ...
BACKGROUND: Recent advances in the therapy of advanced testicular nonseminomatous germ cell tumors (NSGCT) have resulted in increased attention to avoiding double therapy in cases where single modality therapy will suffice. METHODS: Over an 8-year period, 104 patients with Stage II and III testicular NSGCT received primary chemotherapy. Seventy-nine patients had retroperitoneal lymph nodal metastases, 33 of whom had a radiologic complete response, 43 a radiologic incomplete response, and 3 were not re-evaluated after induction chemotherapy. Thi...
Utilization of care for rheumatic disorders was studied in two primary care units. In both units 12% of visits concerned some form of rheumatic disease. This diagnostic group (chapter XIII of ICD) ranked third after cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. The total number of visits per inhabitant was higher for all diagnoses, as well as for the rheumatic disorders, in the most remote primary care unit. The distribution of rheumatic diagnoses was similar in the two units. Back disorders were most frequent among men, whereas soft tissue rheumati...
PURPOSE: To prospectively study and compare the effectiveness and the safety of primary deep sclerectomy with and without the use of mitomycin C in eyes with open-angle glaucoma. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 90 eyes of 90 patients with primary open-angle glaucoma or pseudoexfoliative glaucoma underwent deep sclerectomy. Patients were enrolled consecutively and assigned randomly to undergo deep sclerectomy without the use of mitomycin C (DS group) and deep sclerectomy with the application of mitomycin C (DSMMC group) in a concentration of 0....
OBJECTIVE: To compare the characteristics of visual field defects in primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG) and primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG). METHODS: Subjects with primary glaucoma aged 30 years and older were prospectively considered for inclusion. Automated static white-on-white perimetry was performed. A minimum of 2 reliable tests was required with a mean deviation (MD) within 2 dB on 2 tests. Subjects with previous symptomatic angle-closure, normal-tension glaucoma, visually significant cataract, or previous intraocular surgery were ...
PURPOSE: Primary care cancer lead clinicians (PCCLs) act strategically in primary care trusts (PCTs) in England to improve communication and understanding of cancer across primary and secondary care and provide a link between Cancer Networks and primary care. The aim is to evaluate the first three years of the initiative. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: A postal questionnaire was sent to all PCT chief executives in all PCTs in England and some were passed on to other PCT managers for completion. The response rate was 61 per cent. PCT directors of ...
Between November 1957 and December 1963, 169 premenopausal and 177 postmenopausal patients were included in a randomized clinical trial. In the experimental group ovarian irradiation was given shortly after mastectomy. In the control group ovarian irradiation was planned for the time of first recurrence. The last published follow-up in 1974 [1] revealed a significant effect on disease-free survival both in premenopausal and postmenopausal patients. The latest results from a follow-up conducted in 1989 demonstrate a significant effect also on cr...
Of 124 patients with oral squamous cell carcinomas treated during the past 14 years, 13 developed second primary cancers with clinical symptoms in the same tissues or in organs different from those of the initial lesions during follow-up. The second primary tumors also appeared in the oral cavity in 3 of the patients, the hypopharynx in 1, the esophagus in 2, the stomach in 2, the colon in 1, the thyroid gland in 2 and the lung in 2. Of the 3 patients with second tumors in the oral cavity, 1 underwent surgery after chemo- and radiotherapy and 2...
A primary unilateral functional lip-plasty has been developed to improve the appearance of the asymmetrical nasal deformity and that of the lip scar in the cleft lip. A triangle is dissected from the lesser segment with the base located at the nasal alar base. The latter is rotated superior-horizontally and positioned at a semicurved release incision which is inferior to the columella. This C-junction of the nostril sill allows an alignment of the nasal structure without a primary rhinoplasty.
