  • Abstract:  Abstract The results of half cell experiments with Li/LiCoO2 in inorganic electrolyte solution indicate the stability, compatibility, and high rate capability of this system. The electrolyte solution has an acceptable conductivity of about 65 mS/cm at 25°C and can be used in the range from -25 up to 70°C. Potentiodynamic cycling of the LiCoO 2 electrode between 3.5 and 4.5 V versus Li show power loss with capacity decrease of 0.3% per cycle. Charging up to 5 V results in no degradation of the CoO2 electrode. In an overcharge reaction Cl2 was evolved reacting with components to compatible products. The formation of Cl2 at the Ni electrode was shown by applying online electrochemical mass spectrometry. Lithium cycle efficiencies of about 99% at 40 mA/cm2 were achieved
