Abstract: Abstract The enhancement of the visibility of system R&M (reliability and maintainability) characteristics with senior executives at the top of the decision-making process is examined. It is shown that possible conflict with other documents used by decision makers poses a drawback. Cost and operational effectiveness analyses (COEAs) are one example, since they are the official, validated cost reference for US Army weapon systems. Further investigation is needed to refine approaches for communicating R&M information
The objective of this study was to characterize weapon-carrying adolescents and to assess whether weapon carriers differ from weapon users. Data were drawn from a cross-sectional school-based survey of 7548 adolescents aged 16-20 years in Switzerland. Youths carrying a weapon were compared with those who do not. Subsequently, weapon carriers were divided into those who had used it in a fight and those who had not. Individual, family, school and social factors were analyzed using bivariate and stepwise multivariate analysis. For both genders, de...
To examine whether a weapon's presence impairs witnesses' memory for auditory information (as it impairs memory for visual information), we conducted two experiments in which undergraduates watched one version of a videotape depicting a male target who held either a weapon or a neutral object and conversed with a female character. The semantic content of his remarks was either easy or difficult to comprehend. The weapon's presence did not affect voice identification accuracy or memory for the target's vocal characteristics (e.g., pitch, loudnes...

The goal of HIV vaccines is to teach the immune system new and hopefully better ways to win the battle against the virus. There are different types of immune responses, those we were born with (innate immunity) and those we "learn" (acquired immunity). HIV vaccines exploit the side of the immune system that is learned (acquired) by providing information to cells in new ways in hopes of enhancing their learning and making them more effective fighters.
Abstract It is noted that Logistic Support Analysis (LSA) and the LSA Record (LSAR) are invaluable when applied to new acquisitions and modifications. However, an examination of the usefulness of the data in the operational and support arena indicates that there may be little value and no need to continue maintenance of the LSAR after production
CONTEXT: Surveillance data on nonfatal weapon-related injuries--particularly those treated only in the emergency department (ED)--have been largely unavailable. OBJECTIVE: To develop a surveillance system for fatal and nonfatal gunshot wounds and sharp instrument assaults. DESIGN: The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) developed an ED-based reporting system for weapon-related injuries. Inpatient discharges and mortality data were linked to ED data, and police data sources were evaluated. SETTING: Statewide. PARTICIPANTS: All 84 acu...
Natural killer (NK) cells are part of the innate-immune system and respond rapidly to a variety of insults via cytokine secretion and cytolytic activity. Their main function is first line of innate immunity across viral, bacterial and parasitic infections. NK-cells are not solely killers but can also act as regulators of adaptive immunity. It is evident from literature that NK-cells are deeply involved in autoimmunity, but the question is how and why they act as a two edged weapon. Number of circulating NK-cells can be frequently altered depend...
CONTEXT: Assault injuries and deaths are a major public health problem in New York City but they are poorly understood because there is a dearth of information concerning them. OBJECTIVE: Develop and implement a low-cost, efficient, permanent weapon-related injury surveillance system (WRISS) for the city. DESIGN: WRISS was established, using a hierarchical exclusionary model, to capture all weapon-related (gunshot, stab, blunt instrument trauma) mortality and morbidity. SETTING: The five boroughs of New York City: The Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan...
