  • This exercise reviews the principles of typical medium access control schemes. Contention-based schemes, like ALOHA and CSMA/CD as well as polling-based schemes, for example in a token passing ring, are considered. Part 1 ALOHA The ALOHA network was developed during the 1970ies with the University of Hawaii in order to connect the different departments distributed across several islands to the ARPANet, as illustrated in Figure 1. The goal was to examine radio communication as an alternative to the existing data communication based on telephone ...

Study on mult-lingual LZ77 and LZ78 text compression
  • Study on mult-lingual LZ77 and LZ78 text compression

  • Abstract Summary form only given. We studied the effectiveness of this multi-lingual character sampling on Lempel-Ziv (LZ) compression algorithms. LZSS and LZW algorithms were chosen to represent LZ77 and LZ78 compression respectively in the study. They were modified to adapt the characteristics of non-English information such as Chinese. It is interesting to see that the Chinese LZW compression outperforms the original one by a larger percentage than the Chinese LZSS compression does (14.5% vs. 3.7% on average). CLZW also performs better than...
