  • Abstract:  

    To enable the theoretic analysis of the potential usage of art in R&D and more specifically in the product development process, this paper is structured from a process perspective into input, process support and finally outcome. Based on this perspective, the usage of art in the product development process is analysed and described in more detail in the following chapters. For a better understanding, the starting point for this analysis is the introduction of some definitions related to art and R&D.

            Small Scale Wind Turbine Installation at Grand Ridge Elementary In 2011 PSE's Renewable Energy Education Program provided a $10900 grant to the Issaquah School District for a small wind demonstration project at Grand Ridge Elementary. The District installed a SkyStream wind turbine made in Flagstaff AZ, it was installed by PNW Wind Power from Olympia WA. Generating 1.8 kW at maximum output, this is the most common turbine used across the country in the Wind for Schools program sponsored by the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) and the National Renewable Energy Lab (NREL). Grand Ridge Elementary was chosen because of its unusually windy location in the Issaquah Highlands. Program Manager, Micah Haman, evaluated potential windy school sites in eight counties served by PSE. Grand Ridge clearly topped the 4 candidate school list. The District's Director of Capitol Projects, Steve Crawford, had anticipated the potential for small scale wind at the school in 2009 and placed an anemometer to measure wind speeds at a nearby building. PSE and the school expect to see about 60% of the optimum annual energy production. The engineers at NREL agreed this is acceptable and common, as finding a good wind site at a school is difficult and the value of this demonstration project is heavily weighted on teaching opportunities rather than the energy production. Additionally, PSE conducted a site evaluation and recommended a separate grant, funded by the Wal-Mart Foundation, for a 5 kW solar photovoltaic system. What the students can expect to learn is the basic form or the Lao Jia form, which is the oldest form of traditional Tai Chi. It was originally a martial art and is still used in Chen villages as a martial art. Here at Morning Crane, even though we teach the application, our main focus is on the health and vitality of the student. Basically Tai Chi is a moving form of Qi gong but is much more complex than Qi gong. When you hear people practicing Tai Chi, the common thought is that's what old people do in the park. But if you come in, you'll see that it actually presents a little bit more of a challenge. The classes are mixed with beginning and advanced students but what is great here at Morning Crane, is those advanced students can help assist the beginning students. When you come to class you are taught gentle silk reeling exercises, and those exercises basically help to warm up all the major joints of the body. And then those exercises actually roll over into your Tai Chi form, and then from there we go through the entire form even if you are brand-new. I pull the new students aside and I start with them from scratch. I think it is imperative for the new students to see the whole form every week because eventually when I go to teach them a new posture they will have some familiarity with it. In stark contrast to the upscale galleries of West Los Angeles, where an individualistic conceptual art was taking root, Highland Park was becoming home to an art form that emphasized the themes of community, cultural pride, and economic struggle. Though influenced by the great Mexican muralists of the previous generation, these artists developed a unique commentary on the civil rights and community struggles of their day.
