St. Louis encephalitis virus was first identified as the cause of human disease in North America after a large urban epidemic in St. Louis, Missouri, during the summer of 1933. Since then, numerous outbreaks of St. Louis encephalitis have occurred throughout the continent. In south Florida, a 1990 epidemic lasted from August 1990 through January 1991 and resulted in 226 clinical cases and 11 deaths in 28 counties. This epidemic severely disrupted normal activities throughout the southern half of the state for 5 months and adversely impacted tou...
Superficial collecting lymphatics of the limbs are present in much greater number than deep collecting vessels. There is practically no connexion between both networks. Although lymphatics are abundant distally, they tend to fuse toward the root of the limb. At certain "critical" points along their course, local aggression of the vessels may cause lymphedema. In the lower extremity, at the knee and thigh levels, the "critical" area takes the form of a narrow strip of adipose tissue along the path of the great saphenous vein. In the groin, dange...

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the technical feasibility of an integrated ultrafast head magnetic resonance (MR) protocol using a sensitivity encoding (SENSE) technique for depicting parenchymal ischaemia and vascular compromise in patients with suspected recent stroke. METHODS: 23 patients were evaluated with the ultrafast MR protocol using T2, T1, fluid attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR), 3D time of flight magnetic resonance angiography (MRA), and diffusion weighted imaging (DWI) sequences. These were compared with routine conventional MR sequence...
The 10-year study revealed that the effects of divorce on children are often long lasting. Children are especially affected because divorce occurs within their formative years. What they see and experience during the failing marriage becomes a part of their view of themselves and of society. Although the findings from the study are, in some respects, dismaying, what emerges clearly is that a successfully reestablished family or a successful remarriage can improve the quality of life for both adults and children. The divorce may resolve the fami...
PURPOSE: The possibility that a recent seizure or a recent change in antiepileptic medication might produce an occult change in neuropsychological performance is of interest, and especially so in the context of evaluation for epilepsy surgery. Such an evaluation is often done in a setting of video-EEG monitoring where a strong effort is made to produce seizures as quickly as possible with abrupt changes in medication, alterations in sleep, etc., which could impact the validity of neuropsychological findings. METHODS: A total of 126 adults were ...
