Presence of human chromosome 1 with expression of human decay-accelerating factor (DAF) prevents lysis of mouse/human hybrid cells by human complement. Wang MW, Wright LJ, Sims MJ, White DJ. Department of Surgery, University of Cambridge Clinical School, Addenbrooke's Hospital, UK. Xenogeneic organs transplanted to phylogenetically distant species are subject to rapid destruction mediated by complement. In humans, the complement activation is regulated by several proteins encoded by a series of closely linked genes (RCA locus) located on chr...
The recombinant human interferon-gamma receptor is fully functional in a human x murine hybrid containing human chromosome 21. Bono MR, Alca?de-Loridan C, Letouz? B, Jouin H, Gobin SJ, Fellous M. Institut National de la Sant? et de la Recherche M?dicale U.276, Paris, France. It has previously been shown that stimulation of class I MHC antigen expression by human interferon gamma (Hu-IFN gamma) depends on the presence of both human chromosomes 6 and 21. Even although the presence of human chromosome 6 results in normal expression of the IFN g...
Epidermal expression of the two isoforms of the prostaglandin H-generating cyclooxygenase (COX-1 and COX-2) was evaluated both by immunohistochemistry performed on human and mouse skin biopsy sections and by Western blotting of protein extracts from cultured human neonatal foreskin keratinocytes. In normal human skin, COX-1 immunostaining is observed throughout the epidermis whereas COX-2 immunostaining increases in the more differentiated, suprabasilar keratinocytes. Basal cell carcinomas express little if any COX-1 or COX-2 immunostaining whe...
*Since space is limited, only first author will attend if paper is accepted "Most men lead lives of quiet desperation. "--Henry David Thoreau It is perhaps a fundamental truth to every psychologist and therapist in the United States and elsewhere that the fulfillment of emotional needs is basic and necessary to human well-being. Leading a rich, fulfilling life is intimately tied to being aware of ones emotional needs, and being able to meet them [i.e. 1, 2]. Conversely, a life with routinely unmet emotional needs is often filled with ...

The expression of human chorionic gonadotropin/human luteinizing hormone receptors in human gestational trophoblastic neoplasms. Lei ZM, Rao CV, Ackerman DM, Day TG. Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of Louisville, School of Medicine, Kentucky 40292. Normal human placental trophoblasts have recently been shown to contain receptors for hCG/hLH. The present studies investigated the expression of these receptors in hyperplastic and anaplastic trophoblasts in gestational trophoblastic neoplasms. The results demonstrated that bo...
While dialogue acts provide a useful schema for characterizing dialogue behaviors in human-computer and humanhuman dialogues, their utility is limited by the huge effort involved in handlabelling dialogues with a dialogue act labelling scheme. In this work, we examine whether it is possible to fully automate the tagging task with the goal of enabling rapid creation of corpora for evaluating spoken dialogue systems and comparing them to human-human dialogues.

Abstract With increasing sophistication of automation in recent years, interaction between humans and automated systems has shifted from humans using automated tools to humans and automated systems "collaborating" with each other. In designing human-computer interactions in complex systems, researchers have drawn analogies between human-computer interaction and human-human collaboration. Although "collaboration" seemingly implies achieving shared goals between equitable partners, collaboration often involves partners who have different levels ...
Abstract. We developed and studied an experimental system, RealTourist, which lets a user to plan a conference trip with the help of a remote tourist consultant who could view the tourist?s eye-gaze superimposed onto a shared map. Data collected from the experiment were analyzed in conjunction with literature review on speech and eye-gaze patterns. This inspective, exploratory research identified various functions of gaze-overlay on shared spatial material including: accurate and direct display of partner?s eye-gaze, implicit deictic referencin...
