Video Paintbox The Fine Art of Video Painting

Abstract:  We present the Video Paintbox; a novel framework for the automated synthesis of non-photorealistic animations from video sequences. The proposed system is able to render real-world footage in a wide variety of temporally coherent artistic styles, for example flat-shaded, sketchy and painterly forms. Our solution removes all stroke flicker, allowing animators control over any incoherence they may care to re-introduce. Advanced rotoscoping and matting are also possible within the same framework. Uniquely, our system not only addresses coherent shading, but facilitates automated motion emphasis. Major motion cues commonly used by animators, such as streak-lines, squash-and-stretch, and anticipated movement may be integrated into either real or painted footage. Processing is largely automatic, and users may select from the gamut of available styles by setting parameters on the paintbox. We illustrate application of our paintbox to a wide range of video, including sequences exhibiting both camera motion and occlusion.
