Abstract: Introduction Members of the genus Bifidobacterium are Gram-positive, strictly anaerobic, relatively high GC, fermentative rods, often Y shaped or clubbed at the ends. Bifidobacterium species represent a major element in the microflora of the human gastrointestinal tract (GIT). They are considered to have a health-promoting role of their host, and there is mounting evidence pointing to the activity of these bacteria in mediating health attributes such as alleviation of lactose tolerance, stimulation/potentia tion of the immune system, and production of vitamins and antimicrobials [1]. Bifidobacterium species are also used in the production of fermented dairy products and are believed to play a pivotal role in maintaining a well-balanced intestinal flora in healthy humans[2]. In order to investigate the primary genetic structure of a probiotic Bifidobacterium, the B. breve strain NCIMB 8807 was selected and random sequences were generated to give a coverage of about five fold.
