Abstract: Female primates carry and nurse the fetus, and thus have the ...rst responsibility for rearing the ospring. Assuming males are at least equally adept at obtaining food, males might either share surplus food with females or consume the food themselves. The distribution of this surplus is the subject of a battle of the sexes. If females succeed in obtaining a large share of the surplus, then there is little size dimorphism between males and females; otherwise males might use the surplus themselves to become larger and stronger, and to engage in sexual competition with other males.
The X chromosome is largely inactivated in spermatogenesis of heterogametic males, and in multiple phyla it encodes few genes specifically expressed in the male germline. Writing in Nature Genetics, Bean et al. report a parallel between male germline X inactivation in nematodes and a fungal gene-silencing mechanism that alters the way we view the evolution of both phenomena.
Quality research, requiring large numbers of participants, in the intensive care unit (ICU) population requires multicentre collaboration. Although logistically challenging, this methodology reduces the influence of individual units and has greater validity and broader relevance to patients and practitioners. The nascent Irish Critical Care Trials Group opens additional such opportunities. In the accompanying epidemiologic study, the group present data gathered over 10 weeks of 2006 describing 1,029 patients, from 10 Irish ICUs representing ove...
William Henry Battle (1855-1936) practiced medicine in England > 1 century ago and is primarily remembered for his description of ecchymosis over the mastoid, which indicates fracture of the skull base. Although Mr. Battle made many contributions to medicine, almost nothing exists in the literature regarding his life and findings, especially in regard to head injury. The following is a review of Battle's background and his contributions to medicine, specifically his observations associated with basilar skull fractures.
Abstract This paper presents an analysis of the different TNEs available to DoD, their capabilities and usability. Also, this paper examines the technical support provided by the Battle Command Battle Laboratory-Gordon (BCBL-G) and the results of the test and evaluation conducted on the general dynamics KG-235 Sectera FNE by the Army Test and Evaluation Command (ATEC). This evaluation includes examining the interoperability between KG-235, KG-175 and the network encryption system (NES). The paper concludes by providing a look at future INEs.
Abstract The National Security Agency (NSA) has established new High Assurance Internet Protocol Interoperability Specifications (HAIPIS) that requires different vendor's Inline Network Encryption (INE) devices to be interoperable at a higher level of intelligence. The end result will force the standardization of different encryption algorithms produced by different vendors. The US Army Battle Command Battle Laboratory - Gordon (BCBL(G)) has been entrusted with the responsibility of ensuring that new INEs meet HAIPIS as well as function within...
Abstract The Army is evaluating the capabilities' of emerging technologies based on the IEEE 802.16 standard as a potential commercial off-the-shelf solution to support the communication requirements of the future warfighter. This paper evaluates the mesh mode defined in the IEEE 802.16d (fixed WiMax) standard to determine if it is technically feasible for WiMax to support mobile mesh networking by proposing adaptations to the MAC scheduler and the PHY layer profile as well as organizing the network into small clusters interconnected by a MANE...
