Abstract: Over the past few years, many high performance ATM switches have been proposed. The majority of these switches have high performances but also have very high hardware complexities. Therefore, there is a need for switch designs with lower complexity and high performance. The authors are considering using the folded hypercube (FHC) as a new infrastructure for ATM switches. Before the FHC is modified into a new ATM switch, a simulation model is developed to study its performance. This paper shows how a model is developed for the FHC using OPNET Modeler, and gives the analysis of the simulation results. For comparison, the hypercube is modeled and simulated also. Finally, the simulation results of the two network models are compared to the published analytical results as a verification. This paper also shows how the OPNET's External Model Access (EMA) package is used to generate networks of different sizes.
