Abstract: This dissertation is a report of an investigation into differences in the attitudes of girls towards the learning of mathematics. It compares two groups of girls at two age levels [grade 7 and 11] taught in a single-sex school with corresponding groups taught in a coeducational school. The focus is purely on attitudinal factors and is not linked to attainment. The purpose is to identify differences or similarities in attitude between girls in co-educational and singlesex education which could possibly impact upon other issues such as confidence in mathematical ability, pursuit of mathematics to higher levels and perceptions of mathematics as an acceptable female choice
