  • Abstract:  Data mining is an interdisciplinary research area spanning several disciplines such as database systems, machine learning, intelligent information systems, statistics, and expert systems. Data mining has evolved into an important and active area of research because of theoretical challenges and practical applications associated with the problem of discovering (or extracting) interesting and previously unknown knowledge from very large real-world databases. Many aspects of data mining have been investigated in several related fields. But the problem is unique enough that there is a great need to extend these studies to include the nature of the contents of the real-world databases. In this chapter, we discuss the theory and foundational issues in data mining, describe data mining methods and algorithms, and review data mining applications. Since a major focus of this book is on rough sets and its applications to database mining, one full section is devoted to summarizing the state of ro...

The history of Toxoplasma gondii--the first 100 years.
  • The history of Toxoplasma gondii--the first 100 years.

  • In this paper the history of Toxoplasma gondii and toxoplasmosis is reviewed. This protozoan parasite was first discovered in 1908 and named a year later. Its medical importance remained unknown until 1939 when T. gondii was identified in tissues of a congenitally infected infant, and veterinary importance became known when it was found to cause abortion storms in sheep in 1957. The discovery of a T. gondii specific antibody test, Sabin-Feldman dye test in 1948 led to the recognition that T. gondii is a common parasite of warm-blooded hosts wit...

Toxoplasmosis: A history of clinical observations.
  • Toxoplasmosis: A history of clinical observations.

  • It has been 100 years since Toxoplasma gondii was initially described in Tunis by Nicolle and Manceaux (1908) in the tissues of the gundi (Ctenodoactylus gundi) and in Brazil by Splendore (1908) in the tissues of a rabbit. Toxoplasma gondii is a ubiquitous, Apicomplexan parasite of warm-blooded animals that can cause several clinical syndromes including encephalitis, chorioretinitis, congenital infection and neonatal mortality. Fifteen years after the description of T. gondii by Nicolle and Manceaux a fatal case of toxoplasmosis in a child was ...

Childhood maltreatment and threats with weapons.
  • Childhood maltreatment and threats with weapons.

  • The relationship between childhood maltreatment and future threats with weapons is unknown. We examined data from the nationally representative National Comorbidity Survey Replication (n = 5692) and conducted multiple logistic regression analyses to determine the association between childhood maltreatment and lifetime behavior of threatening others with a gun or other weapon. After adjusting for sociodemographic variables, physical abuse, sexual abuse, and witnessing domestic violence were significantly associated with threats made with a gun (...

Antenatal diagnosis of a Morgagni hernia in the second trimester.
  • Antenatal diagnosis of a Morgagni hernia in the second trimester.

  • Morgagni hernia is an uncommon type of congenital hernia that is rarely diagnosed antenatally. Herniation of the liver into the fluid-filled pericardial sac resulting in a thoracic mass is a particularly rare form of Morgagni hernia; only 3 cases have been reported in the literature, all with a diagnosis made at 32 weeks' gestation or later. We report a case of Morgagni hernia diagnosed on antenatal sonography at 24 weeks' gestation.

  • This paper describes the application of data mining techniques in a Geo-spatial Decision Support System, which focuses on drought risk management. Association rule discovery is one of the widely used approaches in data mining. This paper highlights the rule discovery algorithms that we have developed and used for discovering useful patterns in ocean parameters and climatic indices to monitor drought. 1.

MISAE: a new approach for regulatory motif extraction.
  • MISAE: a new approach for regulatory motif extraction.

  • The recognition of regulatory motifs of co-regulated genes is essential for understanding the regulatory mechanisms. However, the automatic extraction of regulatory motifs from a given data set of the upstream non-coding DNA sequences of a family of co-regulated genes is difficult because regulatory motifs are often subtle and inexact. This problem is further complicated by the corruption of the data sets. In this paper, a new approach called Mismatch-allowed Probabilistic Suffix Tree Motif Extraction (MISAE) is proposed. It combines the mismat...

An alternative and safer method for aortic decannulation.
  • An alternative and safer method for aortic decannulation.

  • The removal of an aortic cannula at the termination of cardiopulmonary bypass is occasionally associated with complications like bleeding, atheroembolism and dissection. An alternative method to decannulate using a side-biting non-crushing clamp is suggested to mitigate against these complications.

Physical punishment, childhood abuse and psychiatric disorders.
  • Physical punishment, childhood abuse and psychiatric disorders.

  • OBJECTIVES: Physical punishment, as a means of disciplining children, may be considered a mild form of childhood adversity. Although many outcomes of physical punishment have been investigated, little attention has been given to the impact of physical punishment on later adult psychopathology. Also, it has been stated that physical punishment by a loving parent is not associated with negative outcomes; however, this theory has not been empirically tested with regard to psychiatric disorders. The main objective of the present study was to invest...

The relationship between migraine and mental disorders in a population-based sample.

  • OBJECTIVE: There is emerging evidence from clinical and community samples to suggest that migraines are associated with mental disorders. The present study utilized a large population-based sample to investigate the association between physician-diagnosed migraine and mental disorders. METHOD: Data were from the German Health Survey conducted between 1997 and 1999 (N=4181, response rate 61.4%, age 18-65 years). Lifetime and 12-month history of migraines were assessed by self-report and by a physician. Past 12-month DSM-IV mental disorders were ...

Gatekeeper training as a preventative intervention for suicide: a systematic review.

  • OBJECTIVE: Suicide prevention remains a challenge across communities in North America and abroad. We examine a suicide prevention effort that is widely used, termed gatekeeper training. There are 2 aims: review the state of the evidence on gatekeeper training for suicide prevention, and propose directions for further research. METHOD: Studies were identified by searching MEDLINE (PubMed) and PsycINFO from inception to the present for the key words suicide, suicide prevention, and gatekeeper. In addition, a manual scan of relevant articles' bibl...

Temporal Knowledge Discovery with Infrequent Episodes
  • Temporal Knowledge Discovery with Infrequent Episodes

  • In this paper, we present an efficient algorithm which discovers rare episodes with a combination of bottomup and top-down scanning schema. The information sharing between bottom-up and top-down scannings helps prune candidate episodes, and thus, efficiently find infrequent episodes that are interesting to user. We evaluate the performance of the algorithm using real-life weather databases. We observe from experimental results that our approach results in 30%-90 % reduction in computation time and 25%-75 % reduction in the number of candidates ...
